Greetings,
My name is Quinn and I am the great-great-grandson of Thomas Hayes Kirk, who according to history given by family members of mine, appears to have been born in Kildorrery, County Cork on November 12th 1884 or possibly 1883. The others notes I have seem to confirm it was Kildorrery since I see on the map that an area called Oldcastletown is just north of Kildorrery, and in my notes it says he was born around there specifically. There is also a mention of a Graig Street but I am not sure where exactly in the area that is. His parents were Daniel Kirk and Elizabeth Hayes Kirk, and his known siblings were Patrick, John, and Daniel. It appears that he arrived in New York City on May 13th, 1906 by way of Queenstown (which I believe is called Cobh now) on a Cunard vessel called Umbria.
I am looking to see if there are any possible connections that I could find in Kildorrery, or if anyone could send me in the right direction.
Thank you so much for any help!

This looks like your Kirk family on the 1901 census - no sign of Thomas at home at the time though.. they are living at a townland named Graigue, in Templemolaga civil parish near to Mitchelstown.
This looks like the best match on the BMD Index for the birth of Thomas - you can use these references to order a research cert costing €4 from the GRO to confirm parents names, exact date and place of birth etc
Name : Thomas Kirk
Event Type : Birth
Quarter and Year: Oct-Dec 1883
Registration District : Mitchelstown
Volume : 4 Page : 670here's Daniel and Eliza at the same location on the 1911 census with two of their sons
This townland of Graigue* consists of just over 560 acres and is located about 13km west of Mitchelstown and 5km north of the town of Kildorrery
The townland is also shown on the c1837 OSI Map
(* there a a number of townlands named Graigue in Ireland. including several in Co. Cork)

this Thomas seems to have travelled back to Ireland as there a record at Ellis island of him arriving back in New York on the S.S. Carmania on the 14th April 1912, as what seems to be a returning resident. Address of nearest relative is given as Graigue, Kildorrery, Co. Cork, and his father as relative - name not very clear but def. starts with D..

Thank you so much for all the information!
My next thing I am wondering is what would be the best way to find relatives? My only two thoughts right now are too either just wait on this message board, or actually go out to Ireland and search around. Any other ideas that come to mind that might be a good way to start?
Once again thank you so much,
Quinn

www.nationalarchives.ie to view Grifiths Valuation records . There is a William Kirk in parish of Templemolaga Townland Kilclooney - Mitchelstown. This was a land based survey in the mid 1850's. This william may have been Father of Daniel whose eldest son on 1901 census is William. This would tie in with Irish Naming traditions where eldest son was called after fathers father. www.historicgraves.ie has 3 gravestones in Kilgullane Cemetery Mitchelstown for various Kirks.
In 1911 census it states Daniel & Elizabeth are married 33 yrs so circa 1878. Eldest son William born circa 1879. Elizabeth was born Co Limerick so you may find a marriage record there.

Hi Quinn
there were 4 Families of Kirk's or Kirke's in our parish - in Knockanevin in Graigue in Kilclooney
and Oldcastletown. If you have names we may be able to trace your family.
We also have a photo of a J. Kirk of Graigue and U.S.A. the ladie that gave us the photo was'nt sure
which townland so we assumed he was from Graigue as my Mother went to School with the Kirk's from Graigue.
if you have more info. pass it on and we will do our best to find your Family
Best wishes Lena

Thank you both for reviving this thread! I had honestly forgotten about it; it's been more than 5 years.
James Hayes, I would love to connect with you and see if we might actually be related if you're open to it. Would you like to start a message exchange?
Best,
Quinn

To Kirk descendant: I am at present researching the Kirk family (including Thomas Kirk). It is part of my family tree through marriage. I would be delighted if you would make contact with me and I can share what I have. I don't know yet if there's a private message facility on this site.
