I am pretty confident that my grandfather, Michael Sullivan (O'Sullivan) was born in Timoleague on Oct. 25, 1870 to parents John Sullivan and Ellen Fitzgerald. He emigrated to the US though Boston, MA in 1890 according to the US Census of 1900. He settled in Chicago, IL, where he lived the rest of his life. He met and married my grandmother, Mary Sullivan (also her maiden name) in Chicago, IL ...they married Sept. 5, 1895.

I believe his siblings include John DOB Dec. 4, 1865, Catherine DOB May 10, 1868, Mary DOB March 29, 1861, and Denis DOB May 27, 1873. I also found three other siblings of John Sullivan and Ellen Fitzgerald Sullivan who were born in Clogagh or Clogagh Kilmalode, Cork. They are: Jeremiah DOB Oct. 14, 1874, William DOB Feb. 2, 1877, and Andrew DOB Jan.12, 1880.

I also believe my great-grandparents were married June 18, 1859 in Timoleague.  My cousin tells me great-grandfather John was born  May 23, 1840 and great-grandmother Ellen Fitzgerald was born Dec. 7, 1841 in Macrom.

I have not had luck in finding more information on my grandmother, Mary Sullivan,  DOB March 25, 1871. I had been told she was from Middle Mountain, Ardfield, Clonakilty and she had at least two sisters, Kate and Nell, but I have not been able to find verification. Also, have not been able to find any more information on Michael's brother, Timothy, who also emigrated to the US and married Mary's sister, Kate.

I visited Clonakilty and Ardfield in May, 2016 and tried to find links to the Sullivans but, though I met many wonderful, gracious, helpful people, I could not find anything substantial. I'm sorry I was not able to include Timoleague on my trip...I didn't have that inormation when I was planning. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello again!

www.irishgenealogy.ie has the church records for parishes in the Diocese of Cork and Ross including Clonakilty. I searched for Mary Sullivan in Clonakilty and there was no record in March 1871 but there was a record in March 1869, March 1870 and August 1871. You should search and see what you think. Here is a link to the parish register  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0033

  • I have located the Civil Record for my grandfather, Michael Sullivan, in October 1870.  I found this information:

I think it says his father's residence is Barryarrageen (?) but I don't know it this is a town or a street name.  Could you help me decipher this information?  Thank you.
