I am researching the families of McCarthy, Sheehan, Mehegan/Mihigan.

Patrick McCarthy married Margaret Sheehan at St Patrick's Church in Goleen in Feb 1853. Patrick was born 1829, he is the son of Jeremiah Carthy and Elizabeth Kingston.  Margaret Sheehan was born 1830, she is the daughter of Jeremiah Sheehan and Cath. Fitzgerald.

Patrick and Margaret had nine children:  Daniel born 1854, Mary born 1855, Florence born 1858, Ellen born1870 1860, Hannah born 1862, Patrick born 1864, John born 1866, Jeremiah born 1868, Timothy born 1870.  Patrick McCarthy was not found on 1901 census.  Margaret was found in 1901 and 1911 census living in Crookhaven.  I believe they may be buried in Kilmoe Cemetery.

Jeremiah and Cath Fitzgerald had three children: John born 1826?,  Margaret born 1830, Jeremiah born 1834.  John Sheehan married Mary Mehegan in 1866 St Bridgid's Church, New York, USA.  After their marriage they moved to LeSueur Co, Minnesota, USA.

I am also interested in the family of Peter Sheehan who was married to Ellen Reilly. I am willing to exchange information

Thanks, Rose

  • Hi Rose,

The Roman Catholic church records are available for the diocese of Schull West (for Kilmoe). These date from 1827 for baptismal records and from 1827 for marriage records. These can be accessed at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4800. If you have any difficulty, you could also contact the parish priest for the area. Records are also available from the General Register Office (GRO), but these only date from 1864.

A new website has been launched this week which may be of interest to you: www.historicgraves.ie

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) and the later Griffith's Valuation. Griffith's is freely available here: www.failteromhat.com or here: www.askaboutireland.com Failte Romhat also has lots of other useful information you could try looking at.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • I am researching a Mehegan/Mehigan family who were in Ballinacurra.  I have found them listed in the 1901 census and believe they probably lived there prior to that.  Do you have any Mehegans from around that area?
