Julia Desmond is my great grandmother.  I found her baptismal information and would love to find more family.  She emigrated to Massachusetts, met my great grandfather, Timothy Whelan, from Kinsalebeg, Waterford (parents Richard Whelan and Alice Hackett, sister Mary/Mariam, born around 1835).  If I can find family, I will be traveling to Ireland to find them as soon as the pandemic allows travel.  Eileen Whelan Ariza, maria.associates@gmail.com

In 1837, the family lived in Teereeven townland n Kilmurry civil parish. The 1901 census did not show any Desmond families in Teereeven and very few with that surname in the general area.

The parents were married November 22 1832 in Kilmichael RC parish. Witnesses were Hugh Delany and Jerry Delany.

    Baptisms for children

    Michael October 7 1833  Kilmichael

    Mary August 30 1835  Kilmichael

    Julia November 30 1837 Kilmurry

    Timothy February 14 1840 Kilmurry

    Joan March 31 1844 Kilmurry

    Honora July 11 1846 Kilmurry

Terence is not listed in the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilmurry parish. Did the entire family emigrate sometime after 1846?

  • Dear Roger,

Please excuse my delayed response.  I was very excited to read your message.  Thank you so much for writing.

Andrew Fitzgerald and Joann (or Joan) Delany were witnesses for Julia's baptism, so maybe Joanne Delany is a sister of Ellen Delany, Julia's mother.  I also have seen Hugh Delany's name, and it appears he is Ellen Delany's father.  I have file folders full of documents and I am trying to put the pieces of this delightful puzzle together.  Hugh was in the USA also.

Yes, the entire family emigrated and in some of my documents, I saw the list of all the children and parents on a ship.  I am looking for it still,  but I did just see Terrence Desmond's naturalization papers during the year 1855, and it swears that he has been in the US for the previous 5 years.

Thank you so very much for this information.

Now I am trying to find Julia's husband, my great grandfather, from Waterford, (Dungargen/Clashmore) Timothy Whelan, parents Alicia Hackett and Richard Whelan.  I found a sister, Mary's baptism certificate (1835) but cannot find Timothy (about 1835-38).  I grew up in his house in Marlborough, Massachusetts,  so I heard about him every day of my life.  He arrived in America when he was pretty young.  He fought in the Civil War for Lincoln, and he was stationed on the ship, the USS Constellation, which searched and intercepted slave ships.  I have a picture of him.

Should I add another parish for this?

Again, thank you.  I would love to find any family in Ireland.

    Best,

I was away for a few days and just getting to your message.

Like you, I was unable to locate the record. I did find Mary in 1839 as you did.

Either thr priest failed to add Timothy to the register or it was written illegibly and the Roots Ireland transcriber could not decipher. Here is the parish register  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0115    It is also possible that Timothy was baptized in a different parish and records for that year are no longer available.
