My great great grandfather, Michael Stanton, was born in Castlecooke between 1815 and 1823. His death certificate indicates he emigrated to the U.S. around 1848. I know he got married 26 April 1853 in Middletown, Connecticut to Johanna (Hannah) Condon, who was born in Ireland circa 1822 - 1825. Any information would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Castlecooke townland is actually in Macroney civil parish which is just to the east of Kilworth civil parish. Both civil parishes are serviced by the Kilworth RC parish. Unfortunately, baptismal records for the parish start in 1829 so no baptismal record would be available for Michael assuming he was baptized in that parish. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0072

I looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Macroney civil parish and there was a Bridget Staunton listed in Castlecooke. Likely Michael's father was deceased and his mother Bridget had the lease on the land.

I also looked at the 1827 Tithe listings for Macroney civil parish and there were three Stantons in Dunguillane which was a place name then but did not evolve into an official townland. Possibly, it became part of Castlecooke. Maybe one of the three was the father of Michael.

  • Thank you for your help! As an American from NewJersey, I admit to some confusion concerning the use of the word parish to describe either civil or religious divisions. In the U.S., I think only Louisiana uses the word parish for any civil government designation.

Now, if I could just definitely connect my Michael to one of the Dunguillane Stantons, life would be complete. Oh well, like the old saying, "My research is complete, said no genealogist ever!"
