Hi

I am descended from Peter Conboy (b 1811 in Leitrim). He married Bridget Clarke (b1819). They left Ireland for Liverpool about 1850. They had children (Mary Teresa, Catharine,John, Michael and James) .Then they had two(Thomas and Joseph) in Liverpool.

I strongly suspect Peter had a sister named Elizabeth Conboy (b 1807) who married james McHugh in 1830 in Fenagh RC parish.  The McHughs preceded the Conboys to Liverpool and served as godparents to the Conboy children born there.

I am not sure where the Conboys lived in Leitrim. I did find a baptismal record for a John Conboy born to a father named Peter in 1849 in Kankeel (Cankeel) of Annaduff Parish . Other than the first name (John), the baptismal record would be a perfect fit for my tree's James Conboy. Perhaps it was a mistranscription.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris

  • Hi Chris,

Could you please post your message on the Fenagh parish profile page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/fenagh-leitrim and here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/annaduff-leitrim

Fenagh church records begin in 1835 (baptismal records) and 1826 (marriage records). These can be accessed through the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 4239, or the Church of Latter Day Saints, ref. no. 1279223 item 1-3. If you have any difficulty, you should try writing to the parish priest.

Annaduff church records begin in 1849 for both baptismal and marriage records. These can be accessed through the NationalLibrary of Ireland, Pos. 4236, or the LDS 1279224 item 18-20; 1279225 item 1-3.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

  • Hello

I am a decendant of a John Conboy that died in the 1920's when he was in his late seventies or early eighties in the US in NY State. Can you tell me where you found the records for the John you have listed because I have not been able to find him anywhere. Thanks
