I am trying to find where John O Keeffe was during the 1901 Census of Ireland. Here is the URL to the 1911 census that shows John O Keeffe as head of family:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Fermoy_Urban/Will…
Here is the same family, but John O Keeffe is missing:

Thank you in advance for your help in finding John O Keeffe in 1901.

Joseph:
I did a search of the 1901 census throughout Ireland for all John O'Keeffes who were between 30 and 40. There were 61 records and I didn't see a record which would match your John. I also searched for all John Keeffe records between 30 and 40 ( there were 49) and found one record which may be a possibility..
Since John was a labourer in the building trade in 1911, I assume he had the same position in 1901. In the census record below, the John Keeffe was a labourer to a stone mason and was married. He was also born in Co. Cork

If this record is not for your John O'Keeffe then possibly he was working in England.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I?d agree with Roger. Huge numbers of Irish workmen went to work in England (and still do). They would travel home a couple of times a year. I?d look for him in the 1901 English census.

Roger,
Thank you for your help. The reason I ruled out the John OKeeffe you suggested is that the John OKeeffe I am looking for could not read. I did find a John OKeeffe from Cork in Cavan County (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cavan/Cavan/Barrack_Hi…) but this person could also read and write. I will see what I can find in the UK Census. Joseph
