I'm searching for information on Timothy Cornelius Buckley born 4 Oct 1883, Millstreet, Co. Cork to Cornelius Buckley (1844-1915) and Margaret O'Connell (1860 - ?).  His siblings Patrick C. (1872-1948), Hannah M. (1874-1966), John C. (1876-1933) Bartholomew (1878-1937), and Michael his twin (1883-1956).

Both Michael and Timothy mined gold in Alaska.  Timothy returned to Ireland (1926) and married Catherine Abina Murphy (1898-2000). He opened a pub in Cork called 'The Alaska" .

Timothy and Catherine's children, Cornelius (Con), Margaret Mary (Maura), Kathleen (Colleen), Veronica (Sister Teresa), John (Emmett), Barthlolmew (Bart), Ann (Phyllis), emigrated to the U.S.  Timothy and Catherine eventually followed their children and settled in Washington, DC.

i'VE DISCOVERED THE ADDRES OF THE PUB:

There were 2 locations

15 Lavitts Quay

and

16 half Moon Street

 - The Alaska was across the street from the stage door entrance of The Cork Opera House.

I tried to post on the suggested parish site (Drishabe) but they are not up and running yet.

Thanks for responding to my previous post.  Kim

  • Hi there,

You can still post your message to the Drishane parish page. It may not be active (yet!), but it will in time. You can post your message here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group?term_node_tid_depth=All&title=drishane

In addition to the information I posted on your last message, you should also check the trade directories for information or advertisements for the Alaska Pub. http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/places/streetandtradedirectories/

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Kim

I contacted Cork Past and Present to see if they knew anything about The Alaska and this was the reply:

"Regarding your Alaska Bar query. Yes, there was a pub of that name and it was owned by a John Carty from 1891 to 1907 . This info can be found in the Cork directories."

It would seem that it was already in existence before your family returned in 1926.  Wonder were they just attracted to the name and would they have managed it rather than owned it.  The next time I'm in the city I'll check out the area.  It has undergone extensive redevelopment in recent years.  Best of luck with your search.

  • Hi Brenda,

Thank you for the information.  I will ask my mother-in-law (Tim Buckley's daughter) if she knows anything about the previous owner.

    Take care,

  • Hi Kim-- according to the 1911 census of Ireland there was a family by the name of O Connor living in the pub at 15 Lavitt's Quay  at that time . The reason you have 2 addresses is the building would have been on the corner of both streets which adjoin . No listing for a pub at 16 Half Moon St,

Both Nicholas O Connor and his wife Margaret were both licensed vintners. They had one child aged 5 yrs old .

There was also a bar attendent and a domestic servant there on the night the census was taken. I know this area quiet well as my own father was also born  in a public house  just a few doors away from there in 1905.Its possible the pub had another name then, and was renamed by your ancestors.Hope this piece of information might be helpful to you .

    Regards Carmel.

  • Carmel,

Thanks for responding.  I spoke with my mother-in-law , daughter of Timothy Cornelius Buckley (1883-1975), she said that they owned the pub and leased the land.  Timothy operated the pub sometime around 1930.

His wife was Catherine Abina Murphy (1898-2000), children Cornelius Michael (1927-2002), Margaret Maura (1928- ), Kathleen Colleen (1929 -), Veronica Theresa (1931-), John Emmett (1932-), Bartholomew (1935-2003), and Ann Philomena (1937-).

    Thanks,

    Kim
