Hi,

I live in Brazil in the state of Bahia. In 1827 some irish families were brought from Cork  to Brazil to help populate some areas, after a revolt due to the conditions of the deal, some of this families were settled in the city of Tapero? in Bahia. I am trying to get more information about these families in order to be able to discover which family are my ancesters.

Can anyone help me with some information? There is a book about this theme but it is in portuguese. I'm trying to get the certificates of birth of my ancesters but it is too dificult to track it down until 1800's due to the lack of organization of the local offices.

thanks

  • Hi ROSHAUX

They arrived in Bahia in 1827 to farm, but before they were at Rio de Janeiro. They weren't soldiers, they were poor people and families from near cork who were deceived by a British Colonel from Ireland,  Colonel William Cotter, promising them lands without say that before they should fight in a war (The Cisplatine War). I will get soon more info in Rio de Janeiro where I've located some historic books where I can find the names and other data. I'm planing too to go to Tapero? and region (the birth place of my father) to try to get historical documentation. I'll be updating the information i get, here.

    regards
