From the little bit of info we have, John O'Shea was born in County Cork in 1825.  He married Ellen McGuire, also of County Cork and they emigrated to the US in the 1860's.  I'm trying to get any and all information I can on both.

  • Hi we will look up our records.  O'Shea is not a popular name in this area but you never know best wishes with your research and enjoy St. Patrick's Day Slan Lena

  • I believe the parents of the John O'Shea I am looking for are Michael O'Shea and Mary Hurley.  Both would have been born in the late 1700's or early 1800's.  Also, it appears John was a bachelor when he left Ireland, so the McGuire name I mentioned in my last message is of no use since she was from Queens County and they met aboard ship to the US.

  • I have come across a type written letter that my grandmother wrote about her family's history.  It has basically the same information that I relayed in my earlier request but there are a few differnces in dates.  She states that John Shea (son of Michael & Mary) was born in 1841 instead 1824 and he emigrated to the US at age 23.  I have since found his obituary from July 1926 that gives his age as 88, which would make his birth year 1838.  Her letter goes on to say that John met his future wife on the voyage and settled in Brooklyn.  I have found the family in the 1880 US Census in Brooklyn with 7 children; the oldest are Mary & Michael which makes me think we have John's parents names correct.  Mary is listed as being age 17 in 1880, so I assume that John must have arrived in 1861 or 1862.  I have searched the passenger lists and have found several John Shea's, but I can't pinpoint which one is mine, especially since (according to my grandmother) there has to be an Ellen McGuire on the same passenger list.   I know they were Catholic and I have looked at the marraige and baptism records that are available online.  I have found baptism records for several children of a John Shea & Mary Hurly but not Michael Shea & Mary Hurly.   I also found a document that I think is a record of my great-great grandfather entering an almshouse here in Saratoga County, NY, listing his parents as Michael & Mary and his place of birth as Bantry Bay.   The baptism records I found are from Bantry & Durrus, but I have nothing that shows a John Shea, born in the late 1830's or early 40's to Michael Shea & Mary Hurly.  I'm quite frustrated.  My daughter is studying Ag. Business and is doing a study abroad program in May.  She will be in Cork & Kerry for a few weeks and I was hoping to get to the bottom of this before she got there, so if she had some free time, she could visit where her ancestors came from.  I have sent away for John's Naturalization paperwork and death certificate in hopes that it will confirm his parents and place of origin.  I am losing hope that I will have the answers I'm looking for in time for my daughters visit.   Any insight or information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
