  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query. Looking at the spelling for Margaret, could the surname be Traynor?

Do you have any additional information for exactly where Owen died and was buried? You could check newspapers for death notices for that date if you do.

Did you check the marriage certificate for Mary Brady and Owen Murray yet? If not, you might find more details for the exact location her parents were from in Cavan. Again, you have the date Mary Brady died. Check the newspapers and family memorial cards for information.

I hope this of some help. In the meantime, keep an check on the IRO website. Try posting this message on the County Cavan message board: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-cavan

    Kind regards,

  • I have found Owen Murray on the 1860 census of Wisconsin, but his age is 10 years different from what I had. Stated that he was born about 1825, and I have 1835.  I found the church record of their marriage and it was on July 1, 1862 in Benton, Lafayette County, Wisconsin( it has nothing but names and date). I have the USA federal census from 1870, 1880, 1890 , 1900 in which either Owen and Mary or in 1900 only Mary and children, as Owen died in 1899.

Owen purchased land in Lafayettte county in 1861 before they married. The 1900 census of Mary states that she immigrated in 1856, but I have been checking the Immigrant ship list and hav enot found either of them.

I checked the church records and found the baptism records of a couple of the children and there is a Thomas Trainer as a godparent. I will see if I can attach a family group sheet on this family. It has all the information I can find on them.

I do have the death records of both Owen and Mary and it has no information other then dates. The newspaper article on Owen's death has no surviors or information other then he died suddenly.

    Notes

Relationship Notes for Owen Murray and Mary Brady

Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, OP was caring for the churches in Benton and New Diggings, WI, and the

church records do not specify which church it was in.

    Mary Brady

1900 census states she immigrated in 1856.

    James Murray

The tombstone of Owen and Mary Murray have the names of James, Mary and Thomas on the back side.

It is writen that he died in 1878. The 1870 census had James listed as 4 years old.

    Mary Murray

Mary was sick for around 2 years and died of Tuberculosis.

    Owen Murray

His death record was not at St.Patrick's Catholic church in Benton, WI.

    Katherine Murray

The newspaper article after her death says she ws taken to Benton to be buried. There are no records of

her burial in St.Patrick's Church, Benton.

    Thomas Murray

I added this Thomas as in the 1880 census it states there is a Thomas 3months old.

The other Thomas was not born until 1882.

In the 1900 Census, Mary Murray stated that she had 8 births and 5 living children. So I think this fits.

  • Hi there,

It sounds like you have done quite a lot of research already. You state here "I have found Owen Murray on the 1860 census of Wisconsin, but his age is 10 years different from what I had. Stated that he was born about 1825, and I have 1835." Very often in Irish census records, the ages is not accurately recorded, and be out as much as ten years! Perhaps this record is the same.

Please post your message on the County Cavan parish page if you have not already done so.

Have you tried looking a the land record called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) for the parents of Owen Murray?

I hope someone locally or in the US will be able to help you out a bit more.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead
