I am trying to trace the family of my Great, Great grandfather Martin Curry  born approx 1858 who moved with his wife Margaret and children to Leigh Lancashire England to find employment as colliery labourers .

On the 1881 census he has daughter Mary age 24, Son Patrick age 23, Daughter Sarah age 18 all born in Ireland. They were accompanied by James Roache age 28.

My father  said Martin  Curry came from Cork ,

On the 1911 census he lists his place of birth as Toore . I havent found a location for that.

I have found a family named Curry on the Ireland 1901 census resident in Shanballymore Town , I'm not sure if there are any connections.

Thankyou for any help

  • Hi, thanks for your message.

The irishtimes website shows all the Curry households in Ireland in the mid-19th century. It lists Cork as having only 6 households. This information can be found at the following link and may help you to narrow your search

The National Archives UK may also prove helpful as it offers information on emigrants going in to the UK, you may be able to get more information on your great great grandfather that may be of help.

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
