  • A Laurence Barry was baptized in the RC parish of Donoughmore, Cork, on 1 Sept. 1821. Parents: John Barry, Mary Dineen. Witnesses: Patrick Scanlan, Ellen Healen.

This Laurence had siblings John, Catherine, Richard, William, Michael, Honora.

I cannot say without further information whether this is the Laurence you are looking for. In particular, the names of your Laurence’s children do not include a John or a Mary, and Irish naming patterns at the time meant that children were named after their grandparents. Of course, it is possible there were children named John or Mary who died young.

  • Hi, Since posting the above, I found a tree online with a link to findagrave:
    https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/145095586/lawrence-barry

This shows a headstone for a Laurence Barry who died in PA in 1899. Is this your Laurence? If so, note the headstone says he was born in LIMERICK. Not that headstones are always right, but then again...

As you worked your way back from generation to generation and found parents' names for Laurence, did you find them on a death record? If so, that info was not provided by Laurence himself. "John and Mary" may have been provided by a third party who was mistaken, ill-informed, grieving, etc.

    I hope this is helpful.

This is a very long shot but in the 1990s my sister and husband while looking for information on our family in Ringaskiddy in Co Cork spoke with a Mr Barry who owned the local shop in the  township.he was very knowledgeable regarding family. You could write to the person owning the shop. Maybe could still be Barrys'.

  • Shirley:  Yes the Anglo-Norman family of de Barry was powerful at one time in East Cork and competed with the Fitzgeralds primarily from Barryscourt Castle and Buttevant Castle north of Mallow. I believe that they built the Augustinian Abbey adjacent to Buttevant in about 1250. The Harold-Barry of Ballyvonare are still large land owners in the area. The name is now quite prevalent and usual in County Cork. Your dates are quite recent and you should be able to locate records if you can only narrow things down a bit to parish or townland. I cannot identify any connection to the Bolster family.

  • Hi Shirley,

Came across your post and I've actually done some research on this family.

Lawrence's father's name is actually James and his mother Mary Dillon/Dillane.  See Lawrence's Find-A-Grave for references.  Sorry I can't post an external link apparently!

Lawrence came to the USA with David Hartigan, who was married to Lawrence's sister Mary.   After arriving they went to Maine, where there were Hartigan family members already living.  But they were apparently unsatisfied with Maine and moved on.  When James Barry and his wife and family arrive in the USA, they placed an ad in the Boston Pilot looking to connect with David and Lawrence.  Here is the text of the ad:

Of LAWRENCE BARRY and DAVID HARTIGAN formerly of the townland ofCarnane, co. Limerick, who landed in Boston in March, 1848. When last heard from they were at Monmouth Centre, Me. Any information respecting them will be thankfully received by James Barry, care of Mr. John Ward, 16 Hamilton street, Boston, Ms.

They do end up reconnecting as James and Mary Barry end up in PA near Lawrence.   David Hartigan and Mary end up in Syracuse, NY.

The townland of Carnane is in Fedamore in County Limerick.  Another researcher talks about a James Barry and his house in Carnane, if you google those terms you'll probably find his page on the Conway and Clohessy families.  I strongly suspect the James Barry referenced there is your James.

My Barry ancestors are also from Fedamore, my immigrant ancestor Thomas was born in Fedamore in 1809 to a Lawrence Barry.  I have wondered if there is a connection between these two families.  It is hard to know more beyond that as Irish records in Fedamore only go back so far.  FTDNA does have a Barry/Barrymore project that is pretty interesting and if you have a male Barry descendant willing to test there you may learn more.  Best of luck!
