John Carroll was convicted in Cork of cattle stealing on 3 Jan 1848 and was transported to Tasmania. After serving his 7 year sentence, he was joined in Tasmania in 1855 by his 2 step brothers Thomas & Henry Morgan. Their mother was Ellen Margaret Murphy whose 1st husband was John Carroll sr and 2nd husband was Henry Morgan sr. The 3 brothers later moved from Tasmania to the gold rush area in Victoria and were joined in 1864 by another brother, Myles Carroll who might have been a widower in Ireland who decided to join his brothers in the Kyneton area. Tasmanian prison records indicate John Carroll also had another brother Maurice Carroll and a sister Eliza Carroll neither of whom travelled to Australia.
Records in Australia have pointed to no specific location in Co Cork where they originated from. Based on a search of the Griffith records a best guess, based where the names Carroll, Morgan and Murphy appear together, is the Murragh, Newcestown, Bengour area.
Does anyone see any Murragh area links for the Carrolls & Morgan ?
