Hi

My G G grandfather was John Driscoll (1832) his wife was Catherine (Kate) O'Neill (born 1835).  They had 6 children in the Castlehaven and Myross Parish, Church Union Hall (St Bridget's). Here is their details.  I am trying to find where the name 'Thomas' comes from and have found very close by Thomas's recorded in the Griffiths valuation and various other records.  Does anyone know of a Thomas Driscoll living very close to Rineen, and whether or not he had a son who would be going by the name John, born around 1832.

Also anyone who might know of the Neill's of this area also.  I am very keen to track their ancestors.

John Driscoll married Catherine O’Neill sometime in the early 1850's

Lived in Rineen, worked at Mill?  Births of children recorded in Union Hall church records.

Can anyone recognise any of the above? The area of Rineen is very small and any info would be appreciated.

Thank you so much.

  • Searching through Myross Baptisimal records I found the following entry

    Nancy Byrns April 26th 1856

Parents Timothy Byrns and Margaret Minihane

Sponsors: John  Donovan and Catherine O' Neill.

Timothy Burns mentioned above would have been a first cousin of my great grand father, another Timothy Burns, and they lived in the townland of Ballincolla which is south of the village of Union Hall and looking over the Atlantic.

Could it be that there was a connection between the Byrns family and the O' Neills. Byrns is now spelt Burns.

  • Hello there

It is likely that there was some involvement - but hard to say exactly how.  The area is full on O'Neils, and my other lot, the Driscoll's.  To complicate things with my family there was another couple of the same names Catherine (O'Neil) and John Driscoll having children who were baptised at Union Hall slightely later than my family.....and mine were labelled 'from Rineen'. But it is all very confusing.

There was also a Mary O'Neil (nee Driscoll) who was living on Goods Mill at Rineen (Carrigtishane) in 1901 but she moved to Leap after her husband (James I think) died.  So the Driscoll's from Rineen may have had a connection to Leap (Kilmacabea). There was an Ellen and a John, who were siblings, living in Rineen until the early 1940's when they moved into Clonakilty to a rest home, and when they died were buried in the little post famine graveyard opposite the Mt Carmel hospice.  I visited their unmarked crosses on their graves earlier this year.  Their father was a Jeremiah Driscoll (b 1838), father John (labourer of Rineen) and their mother was Bridget McDonnell, father Jeremiah (a butcher). I suspect them to be family - but still have not made that link.  Jeremiah could be my John's brother.....but it is all so complicated.

I suspect that more than one sibling of John's, or cousins, ended up working in the docklands of London.  There are a number of families with the same naming patterns running through them.

There is definitely a Hayes connection for me, as I have had a gene test and the number of Hayes matches is impressive. I shall go and check with the Byrns/Burns connections.

Any assistance will be gratefully received.

    kind regards

  • My people must have worked in the mill or thereabouts.  Some potential army or coastguard background also.  Does anyone have any information regarding Driscoll or O'Neill (Neale) families living in this area? My direct ancestors were John and Kate (O'Neill) both born in the 1830's, but keen to find any who may be related to them.  Some would have gone to the USA, but mine went to London.

I am staying a week in Baltimore for the gathering of the O'Driscoll clan and hope to get some lead in the history of my family.  Maybe most left the area but I think a Jeremiah and wife Bridget, may be related, and are found in 1901 and 1911 census's recorded as in Forenaght.  Son, John, and daughter, Ellen, moved to the West Cork retirement home in Clonakilty and both are buried in the Famine graveyard (unmarked) in the 1940's.  Maybe this was the end of the family in Ireland?

I would very much appreciate any information anyone might have.

    kind regards

  • A 1911 census of Myross - Ballincolla has family of Michael & Maryann Burns with daughter Mary Kate - age 17 in 1911 who is in our Western Australian Family records & married about 1930 to James Robert Little. Children born about 1930 in Western Australia.

Ancestry input put her born in USA. As she is deceased we are looking for a positive link to this Ballincolla family of farmers as per census.

Would love to have more input on her departure from Cork. There is a birth record of a Mary Kate Burns in Nenagh 1894. Being unfamiliar with Irish geography, can I be informed of the area of Nenagh Tipperary is in any way a connection to Cork are.

    Thanks

JamseI know this is very late response but I have just picked the thnread up when browsing. My Name is James Donovan, my great Granfather was Patrick Donovan married top Mary Fitzgerald. I have located a Baptism certificates 1867 thro 1871 from Chipstead, Surrey England where my grandfather and his sister were baptised. The godparents were John and Catherine Driscoll who may have travelled down from Rotherithe for the event. My great Garndfather and his family then moved to South London with strong later links to Rotherhithe. Other Godparents for my great Aunt Johanna were Mary and Cornelious Neil and for Great Aunt Ellen Donovan Mary Driscoll and John Hartnett. I feel there may be a connection.

  • Greetings,

I first dealt with this your request back in 2012 and I am sorry that you have not succeeded in locating the information you have been seeking.

Sadly I am unable to find any records going back beyond the Baptisimal records which date back to circa 1845 which would wold identify the John or Thomas O' Driscoll about whom you seek information.

Regarding the Burns family of Ballincolla: The Mary Kate born to Michael and Mary Anne married a local farmer from Glandore and her descendants still live there. The Mary Kate who lives in Australia is definetly not from that family.

I would suggest you keep searching the sites on www.irishgenealogy.ie for any clues. Also check out this site which has some extra resources http://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie/ particularly the valuation site and the shipping site.
