Dear Friends of Ringrone Parish: I have been trying to find my great great Grandfather, Maurice Kane born around 1800 who married Mary Catherine Mullen around 1838. They had a son, Patrick, around 1840 and immigrated to Quebec, Canada before 1850. Much of my research to date points to Maurice birth place as Cork but I have not found any documents to support this research. If anyone recognizes the names and can provide any advice on where to search next, I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards

  • Hi

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

The Boston Pilot; From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a ?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 records is available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilot. http://infowanted.bc.edu/

Do you know their religion? Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

If you haven't already - you could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp  or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Dear Genealogy Support: Thank you for taking the time to provide such a detailed response. I have checked out all the links you provided and have not found any additional information. Maurice & Mary Catherine left Ireland with Patrick during the potatoe famine in the mid 1850s. They settled in Bristol, Quebec Canada. I do not know their port of entry. I did find their tombstone at St Brigit's Church in Bristol but the Church does not have any records indicating their birth place other than Ireland. I did find a number of Maurice Kane's via Griffith's Valuation link a while back which led me to the Message Board at Ireland Reaching Out and thus my messages on each of the Parish websites.

I greatly appreciate your help. Anything additional you can provide is greatly appreciated.
