I'm interested in the Coppinger family from the Skibbereen area and was wondering if anyone here may have any other information on the family.

In particular I'm looking for more information on the ascendents of Marcus COPPINGER, presumably born sometime before 1819, m. 4 Jun 1844 in Skibereen to Mary CASEY (marriage record found on http://www.irishgenealogy.ie,), d aft. 1876.

They had 4 children that I know of so far, Mary, Marcus, Thomas and, my ancestor, Hannah.Hannah's baptismal record of 17 Oct 1852 places them on Main Street in Skibbereen, Creagh and Sullon, Record #9765.

Griffith's Valuation shows him on Main St.Quay (Gortnachlohy) in 1853 (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…)

And his daugther's marriage certificate of 16 Dec 1876 lists him as a "gentleman" in Glandore.

Mary CASEY (I've seen it also listed as Maria CAREY) was Baptised 19 Jul 1818 at Creagh & Sullon, Skibbereen and her record shows she was born in Balnashruhara. She'd also be mtDNA Haplogroup I3a. ;)

I now that Marcus' father was also a Marcus COPPINGER, b. bet. 1789-1791. The previous listed Griffith's Valuation could potentially be referring this this man instead of his son, placing him in Skibbereen (Gortnachlohy) at that time.

"Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924" places him as "Arrested by the High Sheriff for Contempt and as a Debtor, #656 - Discharged by order of the Court of Chancery" in Skibbereen on 18 Jul 1861-23 Dec 1863.

Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 lists his death as being in 1866 in Sibbereen, but I do not have the details from that record as I've only had access to the index.

I did find another researcher's online tree suggesting Marcus' wife was a Julia HALY and this his parents were a William COPPINGER and Marie GOOLD, but I've been unavble to contact the individual who had that information to find their sources.

I'd love to hear from any other members of these families, especially if you happen to have any more information about them.

Sincerely,

Lenny Zimmermann
