  • Hi Abbey,

I see the replies now.  This is the first time I realised that anyone had contacted me.

    Thank you for asking.

John Brennan is my great great grandfather. His obituary from Portsmouth, Ohio says that he was from Co. Cork and arrived in Ohio in 1835 after short periods in New York, NY and Parkersburg, West Virginia (then Virginia).  I am suspicious of the 1835 date.  His age and birthday seem to vary a lot on various documents, but in the end he is said to have been born in Nov 1814.  He died in Ohio December 5, 1904 at 90 years old.  I am also suspicious of the 1814 date.  It could well have been 1824 and maybe he was only 80.  I have no idea whether he came to America with anyone else.  I have no idea who his parents or siblings might be.

John Brennan married Catharine Collins b. 1834 after the Collins family came to America about 1850.  The Collins family was located in Virginia in 1850 and then settled in Portsmouth, Ohio before 1860.  The may have married before the Collins reached Ohio.  All of the children were born in Ireland.  The last was born or baptized in 1850 before they were all here in the same year.

I have baptism records of several of the Collins' children from Dunmanway.  More specifically it says "Green."  I'm not sure exactly what that means, but I see a road with that name in Dunmanway.  Perhaps a local congregation.

Father - Daniel Collins  born 29 Jan 1796, married Elizabeth Tanner about 1826?

Mother - Elizabeth Tanner born about 1813?

Children - Jeremiah Daniel 1828, Mary 1832, Catharine 1834, Daniel William 1836, John 1841, Ellen 1843, Elizabeth 1845, Jane 1850.  All Baptized in Dunmanway.  There may have been others.

I am looking for any information on John Brennan and any birth or marriage information on Daniel Collins and Elizabeth Tanner.

    Thank you,

    Richard Brennan
