Marriage - On 5th Feb 1847 Hugh Williamson gentleman of Portrush son of John Williamson gent to Sarah Jane Caskey of Claggan daughter of Samuel Caskey. This couple had 8 children – 2 died young, 2 emigrated to New Zealand, 2 emigrated to the US, and 2 remained, married in Belfast where they both had unmarried daughters. However the custom of using as middle names the maiden names of the families who had married in to this family remained for a generation or two eg. both Belfast siblings had Dunlop as a middle name, eg. James Dunlop Williamson MD, City Councillor and alderman of Belfast City. Their mother's name of Caskey was continued to be used by the families in USA and NZ, other names were Bellis (Bellas), Connolly and King. I would be interested to make contact with any families who could be connected with this one, I will be visiting the Portrush area late July 2017. Thanks, Julia

  • Dear Julia:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

Your comments about the use of middle names and surnames by your ancestors is particularly interesting.  Would you be able to write something about this for others who may be researching those family names from that particular area?  If so, would you email me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

    All the best,

    Jane.
