Looking for information on my greatgrandfather and his family from Moneyneena.

Matthew Francis Murray, born 1862 in Moneyneena, died 1933 in Denver, Colorado, USA.  Emigrated through the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA abt 1880. Married Rose A Lynn, formerly of Cluntygeeragh, Dungiven in USA in 1880.

Matthew's parents were Francis Murray (1830-1896) and Mary McLernon (1830-1880).  They were both born and died in the Moneyneena area as far as I know.

Francis Murray's parents were Matthew Murray and Miss Kelly.  Mary McLernon's father was Jimmie McLernon.  Her mother's name is unknown.

  • Hi pat

I saw your post on Ireland xo an as my ancestors are  both  in moneyneany and drumderg I have done a lot of study in the area and am familiar with the resources and this is what I have come up with for you.

In my searching I have found that the names we think we have might not be the names that were recorded for instance with my family henry was also harry and magraret was also peggy. I have one ancestor named Bernard who was called barney harry phil,  henry was his father and Philip was his grandfather.  So I am just saying don’t be stuck on a name cause the records might not show that name but the records are compelling as you will see. Also the spelling of names could be slightly different.  If you want the web sites I use you can email me which I will provide. Our ancestors were actually neighbors and both the murray’s and the mc lernon’s lived within 1000 feet of my ancestors the mc dades.

    This is all moneyneany !!!

I found the marriage of a francis murray to a mary Mc Clairnon, church record , in 1856 (moneyneany, and ballinascreen)

I also found the record of two births (does not mean all there was)

                    Mary  1857

                    Matthew 1862  (your matthew francis)

In Griffiths valuation 1859 for moneyneany I found land rented by a francis sr. and a francis jr. the only francis in moneyneany in 1859

I feel that the francis jr. is the husband of mary mc  clairnon and father to your matthew francis (1862-1933).

I feel that the francis sr. (your matthew)  is the husband of Miss Kelly.

Francis sr. rented tract 48 A,B,C, & D with the house being on tract 48 B b  approx 14 acres.

Francis jr. rented tract 45 A & B  with th house being on tract 45 Bb  approx 7 acres.

The tracts with the houses are right next to each other and the place name where the houses are is called “Ranaghan” there is another house in this group tract 49 B rented by a Bernard murray (francis sr ‘s brother???).

There is also in the 1831 census index for moneyneany     a matthew and two francis murray’s (no other information in the 1831 census than head of household) matthew francis’s  father francis could not be one of these two francis’s because being born in 1830 would make him one year old.  And the ages for the francis sr and francis jr make it a good possibility that  they are your William (father) and francis (son).  As you will see in the Griffiths revisions information.

Searching Griffiths valuation revisions which range from 1860 -1929 I found the following:

The tract 48 (francis sr) was transferred to a john murray (son of frank) in 1885 (that places francis sr in the right time frame born 1800-1810,  gave birth to francis 1830, on the 1831 census as matthew ,  and deceased around 1885.

Tract 45 (francis jr.) was transferred to a james murray  (son of francis) possibily 1893 which is close to the death of francis 1896.  Francis would have been about 63-66 could have been ill or injured before death in 1896.

There is no record of a francis murray in moneyneany in the 1901 census. However there are three john murray’s ages  60, 54, and 60 for tract 48 (francis sr.) could potentially place one of these johns as francis sr.’s (matthews)  sons.

Again no record of francis murray in 1901 census.  However, tract 45 francis jr. transferred to james murray (son of francis).  There are two james murray’s in the Ireland 1901 census one is 39 (house 23) and one is 52 (house 34)  years old. The 52 year old is too old to be a son of francis jr. however the 32 year old james is the right age to be francis jr.’s son brother to matthew francis of Colorado.

There are two Murray’s living today on Ranaghan rd. moneyneany NI

    S. murray

    19 Ranaghan rd

    (028) 7962 7409

    And

    s. murray

    17 ranaghan rd.

    (028) 7962 8166

13 0f 61 families listed in the Ireland 1901 census are listed as murray’s

    To the Mc Lernons

1831 census for moneyneany lists a james Mc Lamon a house holder.  Spelling and sound is very close

Griffiths  valuation 1859 lists a james Mc Clarmon tract 8 Aa.B house on Aa.   land was transferred to a john Mc Clarmon in 1876 then for a few years the name is listed as Mc Clamon then the tract is transferred to a james Mc Larmon around 1903  spelling variations should not throw you off.

1901 ireland census for house #38 lists john Mc Lernon aged 77  with a james as son aged 45. Whoch coincides with land changing to james.  Verified by 1911 census the only Mc Lernon is listed as James .

The mc Lernon name has many spellings. And you cant be thrown off by that.  I can get together screen shots and copies of most of these documents.

The distance between tract 45B -48B (the murray’s) and 8A (the mc Lernons) is only about 2500 feet give or take.

There are 5 mc lernons living in the area but none close to the family homestead tract 8.

hope this provided you some more information on your family.
