Hello from Canada.  I'm looking for any help that someone may offer.  My Maternal Great Grandparents were William John Wisner & his wife, Jean/Jane Carr.  I'm quite sure that William's father's name was Samuel and that they were both Blacksmiths.

There seem to be many variations to the spelling of Wisner/Wisener/Wisoner and there's probably more I haven't seen yet.

I do have the 1901 & 1911 census for this family.  I would really like to know where to look to find birth records etc for these three ancestors.  The family's religious preference has been listed as Presbyterian & William & Jean's son Bobbie (Robert) was buried in Tobermore after his death in 1915.

  • Is this your family in 1901:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Tobermore/Tobermore_Town/1531457/

If so, William’s occupation then was “Nailor” ie he made nails (which he probably did in a blacksmiths forge).

If it is that family then the relevant marriage appears to be between William Wisner and Jane McGlade. Their marriage was registered in Cookstown 7.1.1889.  If you view the marriage certificate you should get the respective fathers’ names.

I looked for the births of their children and noted the following: William 29.4.1888; Alexander 23.2.1890; John 9.2.1892; Joseph 18.2.1894 & Matilda 26.2.1896.

You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864 so you may be able to locate both William and Jane’s births on the site too. However for their parents you will need to rely on church records, which means you would need to know where they were living when they were born. Some church records are on-line on the rootsireland and fmp sites but not all are, especially many Presbyterian records. You might need to go to PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast to search them.

If the above is not your family, perhaps you can post a link to them in the 1901/1911 censuses so as I can trace the correct one.

  • Hi from Scotland. We share the same great grandparents. My maternal grandfather was Joseph Wisener.

Bobby was 8yrs old when he died and is buried in Tobermore. He was buried with Military Honour and his grave is still looked after.

My mother has a lot of information on the Wiseners and as she spent many happy holidays with her grandparents, she also has a lot of happy memories about them and many other members of the family

  • My records show William John Wisner and Margaret Jane McGlade with nine children, one is my grandmother Jeanette Wisner who married William Archibald Moore. I do have a fair bit of the family history of the Wisners but no original documents.

  • Hi Robert, your grandmother was my mothers aunt and she came to stay with us in Scotland with your grandfather, Great Uncle Archie. I also remember your mum Adeline and also your sister Kathleen. Have you got a brother called Brian?

My mum and myself were in Toronto in1985 and met up with a lot of Wiseners at that point.

  • Hi Christine

I'm Robert Brian Adalines oldest son. I didn't get to meet you when we were in Scotland and you were in Canada. I did stay at your moms briefly in Glasgow in 1969 and Rutherglen in 1999.

I will try to IM you on Facebook. Hope that is ok.

  • Hello everyone.  Thank you all for your replies.

I'm Mary Minerva's  (Minnie) eldest Grandchild.  My dad was her & Arthur McGowan's middle son, Howard.

Elwyn, you did indeed find the right census.  Both the 1901 & 1911 census state that the family were Presbyterian. Thanks for the links to the certificates.

Christine, Hello.  I don't know if you've 'Googled' Bobby, but I've found a lovely picture of his headstone & a nice little write up about his life. His short life was often talked about when I was young!

Up to now, I think I've been able to follow up on all of Minnie's brothers & sisters, except John.

I'd be happy to share any info that I have

  • Hello!

I am aware this post is years old but I have the people you mentioned in my family tree and might be able to help with any information you need. Also pretty interested in the Scottish link as I am from Glasgow and have Wisner family here as well!

    Kind regards,

  • Hello from Canada Lauren. I am Jeanette Wiseners grandson. How are you connected to the family? Not sure if we can add to each others family tree.
