My ancestor, Moses Cuthbert/Culbert, was born in Letterkenny town, County Donegal, in 1803. He emigrated from Ireland alone in 1828, arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. In 1830 he married a gril born in Pennsylvania, and they raised a family in the Philadelphia area. There was no attempt to return to Ireland, and we have no information about his family left behind. I believe that James (John?) Culbert, who arrived in the U.S.A. before Moses, and settled in Wilmington, Delaware, was Moses' brother. I am located in the U.S.A., and my limited research in Ireland has uncovered no information about any Culberts or Cuthberts living in Letterkenny during the late 1700s to early 1800s. I am at a loss as to what further research is possible there.
Middle names given to Moses's children that do not relate to his wife's family, and may have an Ireland connection, include Campbell, Morrison, and Irvin.
Another strange fact is that on the Bark Asia passenger list, my ancestor was clearly listed as Moses Cuthbert, however the family always used the name Culbert in the U.S.A.
If you are in a position to help uncover information about his connections to Ireland, please let me know. Thank you beforehand.

Hi
Thank you for your message.
I have forwarded your request for assistance to someone in County Donegal who may be able to offer some advice.
Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you.
Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Hi,
I had a quick look about online and found the name Culbert in the parish of Aghanunshin. This parish is located outside Letterkenny.
I found the name Moses Culbert on Griffiths Valuation from 1856.
The name Moses in not that common of a name so this person could be a cousin, uncle or the father of your Moses although there is no way to tell this.
You can check this website for the above info.

All of the other Culbert familys live in parishes quite close to Letterkenny such as All Saints, Taughboyne and Stranorlar.
I also checked the 1901 Census records and found between 3 and 4 familys of Culberts in Donegal - The family from Loughkeel is the nearest to the area the above Moses was from.

There is a family that live in Manorcunningham - This is quite close to Letterkenny.
I will ask some people in the Letterkenny area and see if they know of any Culbert families that may have lived in the area but going by Griffiths Valuation, and both the 1901 and the 1911 census there doesn't seem to be any Culberts in Letterkenny (Parish of Leck/Conwal)
Regards,
Eimer

Thank you, baya10. I know of these Culberts, but their earliest known Culbert does not connect with mine. Any relations would have to be at least a couple more generations back, all unknown at this time.
