Garth:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
The Letterkenny RC records start in 1853 and are on Roots Ireland but I did not see any baptismal records for the children. Possibly they were living in a different parish. Were any of the children born 1864 or 1865 before they left? Possibly we can locate a civil birth index record..

Yes I think I have found the birth of twins on 13 Mar 1864 Lifford Castlefinn Elizabeth & Patrick named after their parents. I don't find deaths for them so have to assume they died at sea on the way to NZ.. There is a baptism for a Rose Anne CAMPBELL St Eunan's 1854 but no parents names are recorded.

Garth:
Do you have the actual death records? Is the townland shown? I did find the civil birth index records which are below. Like you, I did not see death index records.

I have been led to believe they died on board the ship coming to NZ.
-
I checked the passenger list for the ship they came to NZ The twins names are not there and the only death on the ship was a crew member who fell overboard.
-
Garth:
Maybe they died in Ireland but the deaths were not registered.

Do you know where they would have left Ireland from to get to London to sail to NZ?
-
They had several options. There were some sailings from Londonderry to England but much more frequent services from Belfast and Dublin. The railway reached Londonderry in the mid 1850s, so I'd expect they took a train to Belfast or Dublin, and then sailed to Liverpool or Holyhead from there. There are no passenger records for such sailings which were just short domestic voyages.

I asked about shipping because I found on the indexes at Sth Dublin the death of two Campbell chn named Patrick & Elizabeth in 1865 both aged 1. Allowing for the rest of the family getting to London and arriving in NZ May 1866 these could be the twins.
-
And by the way thank you for taking the time to reply to my queries. If I can help you with any NZ queries please feel free to ask.

Garth:
I think you found your answer with the South Dublin index records. I only looked in teh Strabane registration district.

Obviously those death certs are not going to help me find exactly where Patrick CAMPBELL and his wife Elizabeth HAZLIT/HASLETT came from so I can find details of their parents and siblings. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Looking at the naming patterns of their children if one believes the traditions.of how children are named in Ireland Patrick's parents would be John & Elizabeth CAMPBELL Elizabeth's would be George & Margaret HAZLIT/HASLETT. Another complication is the marriage took place in 1853 and I don't have a confirmed child until 1857.

Hi Garth, just saw your post. I believe Patrick and Elizabeth were my great great great grandparents via John Campbell and Caroline Paratene, (just trying to confirm that) wondering if you have found anything further here or if you have anything around John and Caroline in Totara North.
Kind regards
Melanie

Garth and Melanie,
I am related to you both from Elizabeth Gates daughter of Margaret Campbell and George Gates.
I also found what I believe are the death registrations for the twins Patrick & Elizabeth Campbell born 1864. I believe the deaths in South Dublin are their deaths.
Patrick Campbell: Ireland Civil Registration Deaths Index 1864-1958. Volume: 17, Page 568, FHL Film No:101582
Elizabeth Campbell. Ireland Civil Registration Deaths Index 1864-1958. Volume: 17, Page: 487, FHL Film No.101582.
These record are also on www.irishgenealogy.ie but unfortunately the full record is not available as yet to the public. The death certificates have to be ordered. It seems that they died within a short time of each other. Could have been measles, typhoid or diptheria - only a death cert will tell for certain.

You can order a photocopy of the death certificates from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros). http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx
You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it. You can’t e-mail your order to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

I now have the parents for my Elizabeth CAMPBELL (nee HASLETT). They were William HASLETT (Mill Builder) and Margaret (nee CASSIDY). I wonder if knowing his occupation will possibly help locate where they lived .
