Hoping to locate family in County Donegal so I can make connections and get my tree to go back further in time. If anyone can confirm information about James McGrory and Rose Anne McLaughlin's line or assist in going back further, I would greatly appreciate it! Perhaps later this summer when some parish records go online, I may find out more!

Starting furthest back:

  • James McGrory (b. 1811?) married Rose Anne McLaughlin. They had the following children: Philip, Charles, John, George, James, Michael, Patrick, Anne, Denis, and William. John continues my line.
  • John McGrory (b. 1844, Dunree?) married Ellen McLaughlin (b. 1855, Buncrana). They had the following children: James, Daniel, Edward, Frances, Ellen, Rose Ann, John, Patrick, William, Philip, Michael, and Bernard. Rose Ann continues my line.
  • Rose Ann McGrory (b. 1887 or 1885, Buncrana) immigrated to the United States around 1905. She married Victor Thomas Beauregard and they moved out to Oregon State. They had five daughters.

  • The RC records held by the National Library are due to go on-line on 8th July. Unfortunately I am not sure they will assist you greatly with your research as those for Desertegny don’t start till 1864. (That’s a feature of most parishes in Donegal. Few have any records before 1850).

I see from Griffiths Valuation that in 1857 there were 2 Magrory (sic) farms in Dunree. Both were held by people named Daniel Magrory. Plot 3 was a 51 acre farm tenanted by a Daniel with the agnomen or nickname “Derig” which may be the Irish word for “red”.  The agnomen was to distinguish him from the other Daniel on plot 7, which was a more modest 7 acre farm.

The revaluation records in the Valuation Office in Dublin will record who succeeded each of those Daniels, right up to around 1929. There were still 2 McGrory households in Dunree in 1901 and in 1911.

Here’s a link to a Co. Donegal site which has some data on Desertegny.

Regarding Rose Ann McGrory’s birth, the 1901 census says she was 17. So born around 1883/4. I can’t see any birth registered in Inishowen in either of those years but there was one in Jan-Mar 1882, and another in Jul – Sept 1881. Those are the 2 closest. Ages in the censuses were often out by a year or two as most people in Ireland didn’t celebrate birthdays in those days and weren’t very accurate about their ages.

You can order photocopies of the certificates for €4 each if you want., from GRO Roscommon.

The 1911 census tells you that John & Ellen had 13 children, of whom 10 were still alive at that time.

I looked in the current phone book and don’t see any McGrory households listed in Dunree. However there are some relatively nearby eg in Buncrana. You might want to contact some of them.

I believe you are decendant of the Daniel Magrory listed on plot # 7 in the Griffiths Valuation (not Daniel "derig") Your Rose Ann McGory was a great aunt of my wife Breda Ferguson Athy. Breda's grandfather was Rose Ann's brother Daniel. We still own the cottage at Dunree. I am not sure what relation John (1844) is to the Daniel from the 1857 Griffiths Valuation, I always assumed him to be Johns father but you list Johns father as James? You can see many pictures of Dunree at Facebook.com/dunreecottage.

  • I believe that Daniel was John's grandfather. If you look at the 1951 census extract for Anne McGrory, she lists her parents as James McGrory and Rose McLaughlin. James was living with Daniel (age 76) and James had a son John who was 7 at the time.

I could be wrong, but this is all I have been able to piece together from online resources.

Any information you are able to provide about the family would be greatly appreciated! I know very little about Rose Ann and Daniel's parents.
