I'm searching for information / relatives of a Hugh Doherty, born circa 1856 to Hugh Doherty Sr. and Frances Unknown. On the 1911 census in Liverpool, Hugh the younger stated he was born in Donegal Town, but the family lore has it he was from Buncrana. The father's name is for certain, the mother's name is based on lore, however we also have it that his mother died in Glasgow after leaving Donegal (following the death of her husband) with young Hugh and possibly another child (possibly in utero). Her Glasgow arrival may have been around 1868 or thereabouts. I found a death record for a Fanny Doherty, husband Hugh, with the informant being her son also named Hugh, in Govan 1878, and it listed her maiden name as Gallacher. It stated her to be aged 48 at her death (birth year circa 1830, which would have been about right). This feels like the right family, but it's still just a hunch.

The younger Hugh then migrated from Glasgow to Liverpool circa 1880's after supposedly getting into a street fight and killing a man.  He eventually married Elizabeth Ann Quinn, whose family was from Wexford on her mother's side. I would really like to find record of Hugh's birth, or at the very least his parents' marriage up in Donegal, but so far I've found nothing.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Edie

  • It doesn’t appear there are any RC baptism or marriage records for either Donegal town of Buncrana earlier than 1864. Therefore, if that’s where the family came from, I think you’ll struggle to find any record of either event.
