Hi,
I am looking for any information about the Byrne's from Teelin, Donegal, Ireland. My grandmother was Anne Gillepsie, daughter of John Gillespie (b. 1886) and Mary Byrne (b. 1891). She was born in San Francisco but her parents were both born in Ireland. Mary Byrne's parents were James Byrne (b.1861) and Anne Hegarty (b. 1866) from Donegal, Ireland. I am specifically looking for any information about who James Byrne's parents were. I have not found any birth record for him but I have did find a marriage record that lists his father as Patrick Byrne?? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
I could not find a Teelin in Co. Donegal. See the link below. Is this Anne Byrne's family?

Hi Roger,
Yes, that is the census Info for James Byrne, Anne Hegarty, and their kids. I was able to find that and their marriage record but I can't find anything about which "Byrne" family James was from, who his parents were, or anything about his siblings, etc.
I think I may have butchered the spelling of the town he is from. This is what Wikipedia says "Teileann is a Gaeltacht village in County Donegal, Ireland. It is near Slieve League, at the northwest end of Donegal Bay. Its population is about 250–300. The village is noted for fishing, scuba diving, and traditional music". Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

When I look at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Glencolumbkille civil parish, there are two Byrne records in Croaghlin townland. One was a Patrick and the other Owen. I think Patrick was the father of James based on the fact that Patrick was the name of James' oldest son.
I went and located the civil marriage record and that record confirms the father of James was Patrick. Hugh was the father of Anne. See link below. You may have to sign-in to see the record.

As an aside, last week the Irish government released the images of civil records for free at www.irishgenealogy.ie

Hi Roger, that is great that they have released the images of the civil records. I will have to look through them. My suspicion was that Patrick Byrne was his father but I was not sure. Is there anywhere that his mother, Patrick's wife would be listed? I don't really understand how to read the Griffith's Evaluation but I don't think wives are listed on there right? Thank you again for all of your help!

The only place the mother's name would be listed would be on a baptismal record. I did not see his record on Roots Ireland. However, if he had younger siblings born 1864 or later, you may find a civil birth record with the mother's name.
Wives were not shown on the Griffiths Valuation listings unless they were a widow and leasing land.

I have a Catherine Burney(and variant spellings) that came from Ireland with her husband, William McKain and son
William B.McKain to Philadelphia,Pa. Catherine gave birth to a daughter,Catherine,enroute,family story,about
1837ish? They settled in Philadelphia,Pa.,Cedar Ward,BUT listed as McKean! They had 4 more children in Philadelphia,Pa.
We think possibly she maybe from County Donegal, since having a McKain dna, showing eastern part of Co.Donegal
and Co.Antrim for William......I'm just asking if your James maybe connected? Thankyou Lois
