Hello,

I'm seeking information about Frank (Francis) Mundy, born 1816 Inishkeel Parish, emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1852.  Married to Bridget Early from Donegal, born 1824.

I will be in Donegal late June and hope to learn more before then and while there.

Thank you,

Don

  • Don,

    Unfortunately Inishkeel RC parishes records don?t start till 1866 so you won?t find the baptisms or marriage in those records. No Mundy/Munday entries in Inishkeel in the tithe applotment records (c 1833) nor in Griffiths Valuation (c 1850).

    Without an idea of where in the parish the family came from, searching may be fairly difficult. However Mundy/Munday is not a very common name in Donegal (there?s about 100 in the 1901 census) and apparently pretty rare in Inishkeel, so perhaps that may help your search in the area.

    Here's a link to some information on the parish:

  • Hi,

    Sorry this is a late reply but I came across this thread. I don't know if it's useful but there are a lot of families with the name McLoone which were often nicknamed Munday (from De Luan in Irish meaning Monday).

  • Thanks for the information, Maryrose, I appreciate it.  I've read tdhat McLoone was an earlier version of the Mundy/Munday name.  Would Mundy have been in use in the early 1800s?  Any suggestions how I can do further research on Francis Mundy and Briget Early from Inishkeel Parish?    Thanks again, Don

  • Hi Don,

    All I have found so far is a reference to McLoone/Mundy in the early 1900s in this link:
    https://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/home/1-05-extracts-from-co…;

    Mary McLoone (Mundy) married James Boyle and had children in Pittston, PA. After he died, I think she and her children moved back into her parent's house in Rosbeg.
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Dawros/Rossbeg…;

    There could be a link there somewhere considering she 's Mundy and also emigrated to Pennsylvania.

  • I just saw this post and it looks like a few years ago. But I'll try. I have Grace Munday  born probably 1795 give or take a few years marrying Francis Sharpe. Their sons were Teague and Cornelius. They are the only two sons I could find. Francis and Grace would be my second grade grandparents all I know is they're from Donegal. The names of Loughfad,Portnoo,and Ardara keep popping up.  Their son Cornelius (1829)my great grandfather, married Hannah Gallagher (1835). Whose father was John Gallagher and mother was Grace Duffy. If anybody's out there that could help me with this one I would certainly appreciate it.Cornelius and Hannah moved to Schuylkill county Pennsylvania.

  • Hi all,

    I'm creating wiki trees for McLoones from my family tree.

    The people in this link were known as Mundy if it's of any help:
    https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/McLoone-16

    The above tree isn't complete yet, there are some people missing who I've yet to add.

  • Hi Maryrose. Do you have a tree on ancestry? I have one and it is public but the only Munday I have is Grace. And I can't find a thing about her. I know it's before records were kept. It just makes me want to go to Donegal all the more. So any information you could share or anything I can do please feel free to contact me. Thank you. Lisa

  • Hi Lisa, I don't have a tree on Ancestry. Have you tried researching the surname Geran (or other spelling variations) as this is the Irish for the surnmae Sharpe and may have been used then. There is some information here on the Sharpes:

    http://donegalgenealogy.com/1901Loughfadi.htm

    They may be connected to your family.

  • Maryrose. Thank you so very much for that. I did see that a while ago. Teague Sharpe's brother, Cornelius who is my great grandfather, left Loughfad probably in his late teens early 20s. He moved to Schuylkill County Pennsylvania. He married Hannah the daughter of John Gallagher and Grace Duffy. More people I can't find information on. It is a help to see all the cousins. Please keep in touch. Thank you again

  • Hi. My maiden name is Mundy. Born in Shenandoah, Schulykill County, PA. My great grandparents were Peter and Bridget ( McNelis) Mundy. Peter  came to America from Ireland in 1847, Bridget in 1857. Not sure where in Ireland they were from. My brother was doing research and came across the name McLoone and McGloin also.
    My grandfather was Peter Mundy who was born in Shenandoah and married Mae Donovan. My father was Thomas Mundy. Peter died at an early age and Mae remarried.
    I am going back to Ireland next week ( my third time) and was asking my brother if he found any more info. He hasn't. I searched "Mundy name in Ireland " And was  surprised to see Schulykill County PA listed. Would be interested in any information. Patti Mundy McGovern

  • mFirst I want to start out by saying I'm very jealous. It is on my bucket list. So I have read that Grace Munday/Mundy Could have been McLoone, again many different spellings. That's all I know about Grace. She was my second great grandmother I figured she was born in about 1795. I have a tree on ancestry and it's public I will give you that information. If it doesn't work if I have your email address I can send you an invitation. Please keep in touch I want to hear all about your trip. Mary Alyse Ross  Family Tree

  • I'm still jealous. I will send you a link . I have a lot of people in my tree so if you start with Francis Sharpe 1785 that is just a guess at that year.. It'll get you to that Irish side. I believe his sons Teague and my  Great grandfather are correct. And their descendants. And that's where I'm thinking we might connect in that group. And I know you said you didn't have a tree on ancestry. Did you ever do any DNA? How about GEDmatch? Will you be going to just Donegal or traveling around Ireland? I have got to make this trip sometime in the next year. So my tree is Mary Alyse Ross Family Tree. I never use my given name. Lisa

    thank you so much have a wonderful vacation. And if you have trouble with the tree just write to me back on my home email.  malyse1@yahoo.com

  • Unfortunately we are not going to Donegal. I started planning this trip in October for my 60th birthday which is the 9th.  My brother was the one doing the research and he got stalled.. probably due to Munday/ Munday possible being McLoone. I have been asking him if he found out anymore info and he just the other day mentioned Donegal. Unfortunately we have all of our accommodations booked and Donegal is out of the way.
    my daughter studied a semester in Dublin 2 years ago and we visited then but just stayed in Dublin for the week and went up to Belfast on a day trip. maybe I will get more info and have to plan a trip to donegal. My daughter did her dna and is 50% Irish. My father in law is 90% Irish (McGovern). My father passed away in 2014 so he didn't do his. I am hoping my brother can use some of the info you provided and proceed. Thanks. Will be in touch. Patti
