I am trying to find information about about my great-great grandmother Sarah Rose Patton or Patten. She was married to John Moy (1815-1869) and they had eight children. She was suppose to be from Ballyshannon according to family history, but died in Ireland in the early 1850's . All of their boys had Houston as a middle name, so there may be some connection there.
Her husband John and all eight children emigrated to the U.S. In the 1850's. They were Rose (1834), Sarah ( 1837), Margaret (1839), Ann (1842), Michael H. (1843), Patrick H.( 1847), Catherine (1848), and John H. ( 1850).
Any suggestions as wherer to look for birth, baptism, marriage, cemetery records would be greatly appreciated. I will be in Donegal in June.
Thanks.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Thank you very much for your message. Sorry for the delay in replying, I hope that I am not too late!
Unfortunately, if the family were Catholic it may be difficult to find birth, baptism, marriage records etc. as Catholic records for Kilbarron parish do not start until 1858:
Church of Ireland records generally tend to have an earlier start date as it was the official church of the country at the time.
It may be an idea to contact Donegal Ancestry Centre for some assistance while you are here, however a fee may apply. Here are their contact details:
Donegal Ancestry Centre,
The Quay,
Ramelton,
Co. Donegal.
Phone: +353 (0) 74 9151266 Email: info@donegalancestry.com
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Greetings, I too am searching for ancestors who came from Ballyshannon. The date range begins with the earliest birth record I know of 1829 and the last one known as 1843. All but one brother of four immigrated to America between 1850 and 1864. The one brother who remainedin Ireland, married a woman in Moyra and lived in Derryreel to the north of Letterkenny. I recently located his marriage, birth of his daughter and death records to about 99% certinty. I have not located his farm as he was a farmer there and probably a farmer in Ballyshannon as well. One issue that complicates the search s that theri name was GALLAGHER. There are just so many Gallaghers in Donegal. We have been told for generations that they all came from Ballyshannon even though the one brother married at Moyra and lived at Derryreel. I have a letter from one of the brothers written to another in America that tells the tle of the one tht reamined being married to a certain person in Moyra in 1876. I have searched the availble Ballyshannon Roman Catholic records on this site and on the NIL and they do not cover the specific date range I need. (1829-1844). Are there any other records available that perhaps were not managed or under the perview of the civil authorities? The first son immigrated to America in 1854 and the last in 1864. Thank you and Best Regards to All. Bernard
