I believe Felix Gallagher b.1789approx. And was married to Elenor(Ellen) unknown maiden name, were uncle and Aunt to my GG Grandfather Patrick Gallagher. I believe he came with Elenor to Malone, NY, and perhaps Canada first in 1846 to 1850. The reason I know Killybegs Donegal was his home parish is because it is on his tombstone in St Joseph Cemetary in Malone NY. He died in 1862.

My GG grandfather, Patrick Gallagher, b. 1824 approx and his wife Ann Bannon, came to Malone NY in 1850. They lived next door to Felix and Elenor. They had three boys by 1850. John, James, Felix.

I am not sure if they were from Killybegs also but assume so and I’m also not sure if they were from upper or lower killybegs.

Id like to find their specific home place in killybegs before coming to Malone. I’d like to know if the went to NY first or Canada and then Malone NY. I’d like to know any ancestors names( I believe Patrick’s fathers name was John, as I suspect the naming rules he went by he would have likely named his first son after his dad and he named him John.)

Anything you can help with is greatly appreciated!  Thank you, Betsy Michalik

Sorry for the delay in responding. We had a systems issue that was preventing us from responding to messages.

RC baptismal records for the parish of Killybegs do not begin until October 1850 which is later than you need.

I checked the 1857 Griffiths Valuation records to see how many Gallaghers were listed as heads of household in Killybegs Lower and Upper and there were 66 Gallagher households mostly in Killybegs Lower (53). So the surname was very common in that area.

Have you considered a general DNA test? Possibly you will have matches with distant cousins who may have more information on the origins of your family in Donegal.

  • Thank you so much for getting back to me and checking. I have 23 and me dna test results from about 5 or 6 years ago.

would there be some RC church records that I could check out? Or some baptisms, etc.? What churches( catholic) were in these areas?

I appreciate your help and any way you can steer me. Thank you. Betsy

The one RC parish was called Killybegs. Here is a link to the parish register for baptisms starting in October 1850.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1019?locale=en
