My Grandmother, Margaret Thomas Quinn, is buried in the Killymard Church graveyard. She was married to my grandfather, John Quinn of Balbofey, who drove the Donegal run on the railway. She was from the area of Logh Eske. Because she died of TB in 1914 when my mother was only 2 and my grandfather remarried, we know little about her or the Thomases of Logh Eske. I understand the name Ward also figures in. I would like to access the church records to see whether she was married there and other family names.

Pat:
I went throught the 1901 census and I believe that margaret came from either Friary townland or Edergole townland in Killymard civil parish. There were at least 3 Maggie Thomas' in those two townlands and my hunch is that the record below may be her family. See what you think and let me know. www.census.nationalarchives.ie

I just noticed your reply--more than a year after you posted. I hadn't looked deeper than the Killymard page since then. The link you found could not be my grandmother, as she was born in 1889 and was 19 when married in 1909. I found a photo of her gravestone (put up much after the fact). It says her father was John Thomas of Greenans. I found this guy in 1911, living with his daughter Bridget Ward

It has only been 3 months.
I assume you saw the 1901 census record which just shows John, Bridget and another daughter Cassie.

I checked the Lougheske DED and there were no 11-12 year old Margaret or Maggie Thomas. Is it possible she was living with another relative somewhere else in Donegal or Ireland? Since her mother had died maybe she was sent to live with a family member?

Roger,
You are very kind to do this research for me. That is indeed my family. I remember my relatives talking about a Cassie, who later married and went to Scotland.
That's a good guess about Margaret. She was working as a cook when she met my grandfather, James Quinn, who was a driver on the Donegal Railway. She marrried him at 19.
I will have to search for the Greenans on a map. Is it still called that?
Thanks again,
Pat

Pat:
The townland appears to be spelled Greenan. I looked on Google Maps and Greenan is not far from Donegal Town which is also partially in Killymard parish. Maybe 5 kilometers to the northeast.

Roger,
I have just joined the site and when a saw Pat's post I thought I could help.
After reading through your correspondence with Pat I realise That I cannot help Pat.
You could perhaps help me.
I can confirm that the first family you suggested at Friary is in fact my fathers' family.
He was Peter Thomas born in 1888 to James and Margaret Thomas. I visited Donegal Town in the 1980's where I met
Mr P J MUNDY he very kindly took me and my sister to the site of the old homestead in a forest of Sitka spruce.
He told me about Kilymard. That my grandfather was 'Jimmy the fiddle,' and I had an uncle 'Paddy the poet.' -
Hi Liz
My name is Carol Ann Thomason [nee Thomas] and my sister and I have been searching our family tree for over a year now . My Grandfather was Patrick Thomas son of James Thomas born around 1853 ,who was married to Margaret McCormick . They had eight children that I know of from the 1901 census .They are Maggie ,James, Sarah ,Peter,Ann ,Patrick, Biddy, and Mick. They were from 9 lough Esk in the Parish of Kilymard. My grandfather Patrick came to Scotland with younger his brother Mick.
We dont know much more than that other than some of his relaties stayed in Glasgow , and we know he had a brother Peter somewhere. If you think this is part of your family, I would love to hear from you.
Yours Sincerely
Carol Ann Thomason

Hi there Carol Ann and Elizabeth, I think this is part of my family - hope you don't mind my joining this late (!) I believe my great grandmother Julia Scollan (nee Thomas) was the eldest child of James Thomas and Margaret McCormick - I guess this makes them my great-great grandparents. I have a copy of the only surviving photograph of Julia Thomas. Julia Thomas is not at the same address as the Thomas's on the 1901 census; because she is working as a nurse/domestic servant to the Currristen family in House 5, Skreen, Tullynaught, at the time. Julia Thomas married my great grandfather James Scollan at Kinlough Chapel in Ballyshannon (Leitrim) in 1904. (It was his second marriage, he was a widower) they can be found at House 13 in Finner, Bundoran (Donegal) on 1911 census with four of their (soon to be six) children. The 6th, Margaret Ellen, (my grandmother) was born in 1913 and sadly my great-grandfather James Scollan died three months later at aged only 40 of pneumonia in Sheil Hospital Ballyshannon leaving Julia Scollan (nee Thomas) a widow aged only (28/30). By 1918 Julia Scollan (nee Thomas) was living in Londonderry, taking all 6 children with her and remarried a Thomas Edward Jones (by the way Maggie Thomas is a witness to their wedding and also a John Ward, so I presume that's either her little sister or her mother), going on to move to England with him and have another 5 children with TE Jones. She lived in Chesterfield, Malmesbury (in Wiltshire) and Aldershot (in Hampshire) at some time. At least two of Julia Scollan-then Jones (nee Thomas) children settled in Malmesbury - Margaret Ellen Scollan (my grandmother) and her brother Patrick James Scollan (died in the 1980's), who married Anna Markey (also known as Nancy). Eventually; Julia ran a boarding house in Chesterfield for many years putting up Irish workers and she died there in the 1960's. My grandmother Margaret Ellen Scollan died in 1972. That's where I am up to so far. I would love to hear more about the whereabouts of the old homestead of the house in Friary, LoughEske if you have any more details? Best wishes, Jane Durston.

I believe that some of the people above are my family as well. My great-grandmother was Anne Thomas,(born 1845) daughter of William Thomas. She married Denis Ward in 1870 in Killymard, and came to the United States a few years after.
If she fits in with any of the Thomases. let me know. I would love to fill in the blanks.
Thanks!!
