My 4th great-grandparents were James Allen born about 1750 in Co. Donegal and Margaret Haggerty of Co. Tyrone. Their son, James John Allen born about 1780 married Elizabeth Wilkinson and were of the Parish of Kilmacrennan. They and their children emigrated to Canada about 1831, and arrived with a letter from their Parish minister (who may also have been an Allen) testifying to the family's good character.
Information provided to family member in 1972 stated that there were no records of Kilmacrennan prior to 1848 - either they were destroyed or never recorded.
I would be grateful for any information about any of these families' histories, or where to look. I am in touch with a number of Allen descendants in Canada and the USA, who would all be excited to find out more details!

Joanne There are some earlier records than 1848, If the family were Church of Ireland / Anglican there are records from 1818 to 1830 but there are a number of years missing until 1845 as records were sent to Dublin without a local copy being taken and destroyed in Four Courts fire in 1922. A quick check has not located any relevant records. Kilmacrennan Presbyterian records only date from 1844. In Ireland, Civil registration for non-catholic marriages commenced in 1845, and births/marriages/death registration was compulsory for everyone from 1865, Do you have knowledge of the contents of the minister's letter which may have other district information? Found in the Tithe Applotments of 1825 which is a record of a tax payable by all denominations to the Church of Ireland that there was a James Allen in Whitehill, Kilmacrenan, name listed twice as James jnr also included. The surname Allen is not listed in Whitehill in 1848 Griffiths's valuation. a link to the townland below: I attach a copy of the applotments page. https://www.townlands.ie/donegal/kilmacrenan/gartan/gartan/whitehill/ The Wilkinson surname while not located in Kilmacrennan has numerous entries in the parish of Clondahorky in the North Donegal area.
