My great great grandfather was born in Moville in about 1813. His father was John Doherty/Dogherty and his mother was Bridget Breslin.

He moved to Callan Kilkenny and married Judith/Judy Purcell in 1839. In 1856 John, Judith and three sons emigrated to South Australia.

I would like to know about family he left behind, if any. I would also like to know why he left Moville for Callan, his father was a farmer.

If the family was Catholic, the RC reocrds for Moville do not start until 1847.

Below are links to three websites dedicated to research in Moville Lower and Moville Upper parishes.

I can only presume that your great-great grandfather left Donegal for Kilkenny for a work opportunity.

  • Thanks Roger

Thought that might be the case but wanted to rule out other reasons. He seems to have worked hard once he got to Australia as did his sons.

Is it possible to find out how many Doherty households lived in Callan in the 1850"s?

The 1849 Griffiths Valuation shows three Doherty entries in Callan civil parish. There was a John Doherty on Green St. in Callan South.
