My 2x great grandfather was an Owen Hanlon.  All we know is that he listed "Templecrone, Donegal" as his place of birth (b. 1828 or 1829).  He's presumed to be Catholic. We don't know his parents names, but his siblings were John (b. 1825), Suzanna (b.1826), Patrick (b. 1836), James (b. 1840), Frank (b. 1844) and Denis (b. 1948). We know that Patrick, James, Frank, and Denis all emigrated to America (Denis arrived when he was age 8) and, like Owen, settled in northeastern/central parts of the state of Pennsylvania.

Owen emigrated to America from Liverpool, arriving in either Boston, Massachusettts (1853) or New York City (1855).  He married a Briget Sweeney, daughter of Edward Sweeney and Mary Boyle, who was from Loughnaure. There is a Bridget Sweeney listed on the passenger manifest of the Boston ship (1853) on the same page where an Owen Hanlon is listed. By the 1860s, the Hanlon family had settled in Trescow, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, where Owen worked as a coal miner. Later, the family moved to Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where both Owen and Bridget lived until they died.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out! One of the issues with your query is the fact that records for the RC Parish of Dungloe do not begin until November 1876. Loughnaure is a townland in the Civil Parish of Templecrone (where the RC Parish of Dungloe is also located). As this is the case, there will be no baptism or marriage records for anyone from that parish before this time.

Have you had a  look at Ancestry.com to see if there are any instances of the family name in trees or messages?

    Best wishes

  • Hi, Ann, This is your mother, no, not a Hanlon by birth, but in her heart. If you hear anything about the Hanlon's in Donegal, or the Sweeney's, the Boyle's, the Lowery's, the Sharpe's, etc. etc., please let me know and, of course, I will do the same for you.
