Hello,

I have worked diligently to locate the place in Ireland where my McQuillan ancestors are from and the only tiny scrap of detail that I have been able to glean comes from a birth entry in Garnkirk, Lanarkshire for a daughter Margaret McQuillan that records that Charles McQuillan and Helen Doran were born in County Down. The birth of their last child in 1861 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire records, further, that this couple was married in "Annahlone" co Down, Ireland on November 12, 1835.  I would love to have help to get back to the church or other records in Ireland to discover more about these Irish direct ancestors. With very warm thanks in anticipation!  Sheryl Baron

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I don't believe records are available for your family online. Which denomination was your family?

  • Hi Roger,

My ancestors were baptised in the Roman Catholic Church in Glasgow, Scotland so I can assume that the records were Roman Catholic back in Ireland as well?

If these records are not available online as you suggest, is it possible that there are records kept back in the parish church, or are you suggesting that the records were either not kept or lost?

It is so hard searching from so far away!

    Thanks for posting a response!

    Sheryl,

Sadly Annaclone RC baptisms only start in 1835 and marriages in 1851. Either no records were kept before that or, if they were, they have been lost. (A common situation for RC records in the 1800s).The parish churhc doesn't have any other records that are not available on-line or in PRONI.

As Elwyn, indicated marriages for this parish start in 1851 although baptisms start in late 1834. Here is a link to the actual parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0437   I took a quick look at the register and the early records are somewhat hard to read. If you believe that some of their older children were baptized in Co. Down in Annaclone and you have a rough idea of the years, you may want to review the register. It is tedious work.

  • Roger,

There was one son born before the family moved to Scotland so this is excellent news!! I know his name and year of birth so I shall be delighted to have a good look!

Thanks so very much for the excellent help I have received on here.
