I have traced my Orr connections back to farming in Welshestown/ Russels Quarter North from 1789 onwards.  I have leases for Mathew Orr dated 1789 and his sons William and Thomas who died in 1858 and 1851 respectively.

Their burial records show they are in Ballyculter parish, but I could not find gravestones there for them.

I have photographs of all Orr graves in this churchyard if anyone wants them. The oldest Orr headstones seem to go back to 1730's for a Peter Orr and a Mathew Ore.

I am interested in connecting with anyone who is researching Orrs in the Downpatrick, Saul, Ballyculter or Strangford area.

  • Hi Brenda,

Thank you very much for your message and for your offer to share this information.

I hope that someone who is researching the same family makes a connection with you.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • In researching Barnard Coulter I found records from the Ballyculter Church of Ireland of him marrying Catherine Orr in 1830, whose father was listed as Matthew Orr. Thomas Orr and John Orr were the witnesses. I haven't yet conducted any further research back into the family or the Orr's, but I wonder if this might be the same family?
