Hello.  I am simply wanting to introduce myself right now.  My ancestors lived in County Down, Bright Parish in a townland named Ballygallum.  I am so hoping to track down some information on them from the mid-1700s up until 1822, when our g-g-grandfather Robert Reid came to Canada as an original settler in what is now Ontario.  He married one of the prominent Stewart family from Countly Antrim, plus had connections with the Stricklands in England.  One of his Irish relatives was Grizel Reid, whom I am trying to place definitively.  I look forward to meeting other people connected with this Parish and maybe finding out a little more family history.

  • There?s a mention on this site of John Reid of Ballygallum having a will probated on 26th Oct 1761.

Records from the 1700s are few and far between. It might be worthwhile searching the registry of deeds to see if the Reid family had a lease or other deed, in the 1700s. Copies are held in PRONI, Belfast and the Registry of Deeds, Dublin. (They are not on-line).

  • Somehow I missed your message, Ahoghill Antrim.  Please accept my apologies.  Thank you for the suggestions and the link.  John Reid is one of our ancestors.  :)

  • Hi, Jerry.  My ancestors were Church of Ireland, so the RC parish probably won't have information on them.  I am curious, though; when were your ancestors in Ballygallum?

Thanks for responding to my query.

  • Hi Bette.

We have my 2x great grandfather John Connolly in the ballygallum in the Griffiths valuation and my great grandmother and siblings baptisms 1860-1866. My 2xgreat grandmothe, rAnn, appears in the 1901 census (although her age has thrown us a bit)

Unfortunayely we have not been able to find John or Ann Davy prior to the griffiths Valuation

    Regards

  • Hello, again.  The Reids were gone from Ballygallum by 1834 (Griffith Survey).  We know they were there from at least 1786 and as late as 1802 as freeholders.  I am waiting on information from 1810 to see if they were still there.  Connolly is not a name I recognize from Ballygallum, so our ancestors were probably there at different times.  Would be interesting if the Connollys purchased from the Reids.  :)  Good luck on finding your Davy missing link.

    All the best,

    Bette

  • P.S.  If the Connollys appear with the 1810 info, I will let you know.
