Hi

I've been researching a branch of the OHagan family for many years and have found it a real struggle as they were also Catholics. I am descended from  a Bernard OHagan who was born about 1780 in this area. As far as I can trace one of his sons ( James Bernard OHagan ) left to settle in Liverpool. He marries Mary Ann Kearney in Liverpool in 1852 and then returns to Clonduff parish. He had at least 3 girls baptised there and then appears in the Liverpool census of 1871 with his wife and just 2 of his daughters. His occupation is recorded as school master.I would be grateful for any advice/info which may help me further. I have found the name Bernard OHagan in the Griffiths Valuation records as well as Tithe Applotment. Family Christian names seem to be: Arthur, John, James, Daniel, Patrick, Ellen, Frances, Sarah and Mary Ann.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I saw the three baptismal records for daughters of James O'Hagan. The last record showed they lived in Ballymaghery townland in Clonduff civil parish. I looked at the 1901 census for Ballymaghery (see first link below) and there were four O'Hagan/O'Hegan families. One household had an 82 year old James O'Hogan (second link) which might be your James.

Let me know if you have questions.

  • Hi Roger

Thank you for responding so quickly. I have never looked at the census of 1901 as my gt gt grandfather James Bernard OHagan died in Liverpool in the 1890s. All his family connections seem to have been in Liverpool itself. This has opened the possibility of relatives still being there in 1901.

I would like to know what records exist for Clonduff so that I can find James's mother. Is there any possibility of finding his parents birth etc. I also cannot find the baptism record of Frances OHagan, James' 4th daughter. Census returns in Liverpool state she was born in Hilltown County Down, but I haven't been able to locate any record at all.

Any guidance on these questions would be really helpful

The RC records for Clonduff start in 1850 so you won't find a record for James. Here is the parish register which goes to 1880 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0442

You will note that they do have funeral records which is unusual for RC parish registers. Roots Ireland has baptismal records up to 1917.

What was the name of the fourth daughter? Frances was one of three I located before. See below.

  • Thank you for this. What a speedy response!! I have never seen this record before. Where was it located? The records I have are for:

Mary Anne  KEARNEY Clonduff wife of James Hagan of Hilltown ; mother of Eleanor bpt. 11 Dec 1854 & Sarah Ann bpt. 18 Jun 1856 at a Clonduff Catholic Church

Miss Mary Anne KEARNEY Clonduff wife of James O'Hagan/ of Ballyaughian; mother of Mary Rose bpt. 10 May 1858 at a Clonduff Catholic Church

They are not the original documents. I only have the original for Mary Rose and so know her godparents names, which I find very useful to help make famiky connections.

Am made up with your info and advice.

Any further guidance will be much appreciated

I found the record on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. You can look up the record on the parish register. Link previously provided.

Thanks again for your guidance. Sorry for not responding sooner but I've been without my laptop as it needed some repair work. I have accessed the site you recommended and found it useful. My biggest problem with the OHagans is that they seem to travel back and to from Hilltown to Liverpool and so are difficult to locate on census returns etc. Do you know why they would move around like this as clearly they return to Ireland after the potato famine and are found in Liverpool before this terrible event?Any information that may locate them between census records and suggestions for their movements would be helpful
