Hello
I am researching my Beattie family of the Cottown area. My great grandfather was Hugh Beattie b. 20 Mar 1860 in Herdstown, married Agnes Gilmore (d/o Hugh Gilmore and Sarah Davis) b. 26 Jan 1857 in Herdstown. Hugh's parents were Charles Beatty b. abt 1824 Northern Ireland (?) and Christian David (d/o John Davis) b. 1829 County Down.
Hugh and Agnes had 6 children: James 1883, John Nelson 1888, Charles 1889, Eleanor 1894, Agnes Elizabeth 1896 and Christine 1899.
I know that Hugh and Agnes were married Apr 10, 1882 at Presbyterian Church, Ballycopeland and that some of the children were baptised at the Shore Street Presbyterian Church, Donaghadee.
Their son James b. Aug 20, 1883 was my grandfather and he married Margaret Allen (d/o John & Agnes) of the Primacy on Sept 24, 1906 at the Shore Street Presbyterian Church, Donaghadee.
If anyone might know of this family, I'd really appreciate your help.
all the best from Canada
Jim Beattie

Hi Jim,
Thank you very much for your message. I hope that someone who knows of the family contacts you.
In the meantime, did you know that civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so any births, deaths, marriages that occurred in the family would also be recorded in these record. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records up to 1922 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
For civil records in Northern Ireland after this date check the GRONI http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/general-register-office-for-northern-ireland
Have you tried looking for the family in the 1901/1911 census records? http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:

There are some Beattie/Beatthy folk from Donaghadee on the Ros Davies site:

Herdstown also gets a mention. Has only existed as a townland since 1810.
