Home | Ulster - Ireland North | Messages | This Message Hello Researchers
I am looking for any family information for John Heron and Letitia Mary Miskimin - Letitia's surname could be Skimin or Skimmon. I am led to believe that they may have come from Donaghadee and had 6 Children in Ireland and a further 2 in Tasmania Australia.
The Children were born between 1837 - 1853 their names are (in order of birth) Mary Ann, William, Margaret, George, John and Hugh.
I have some information it may be about a christening for John Jnr, as this information states both parents names his date of birth and another date 2mnths later the town name of Ballywilliam and another name G/Sport Pres (I presume this maybe a presbyterian church)
I know that Letitia's mothers name is: Mary Smith and her father is George Skimin (this information is written in a family bible)
I have no information on Johns parents.
John and Letitia sailed to Australia as free settlers in 1855 on the sailing ship 'The Conway' leaving liverpool and arrvied into Tasmania 14 Oct 1855
If anyone can help with further information on these families It would be greatly appreciated.
Please Note: this has also been posted on the Ulsters Message Board

Hi Dale,
Thank you for your email.
Have you tried looking in church records from Donaghadee parish? There is a Presbyterian church in Donaghdee so it is likely that this is what G/Sport Pres is referring to. Presbyterian registers are held in three main locations:
- in local custody
- in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm
- at the Presbyterian Historical Society http://www.presbyterianhistoryireland.com in Belfast.
PRONI has microfilm copies of almost all registers in Northern Ireland and also lists of records held by the Presbyterian Historical Society.
You could also check in Griffith's Valuation to see if there are any Heron?s listed in the area. this is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-1864. You can search this here:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
You could also try contacting the Ulster Historical Foundation for possible assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email: enquiry@uhf.org.uk
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,

Hi Emma,
Thanks for your reply and help......I have emailed the Pres Church sometime back and had no reply so gave up on that idea, annoying really. I will give it another shot and see how I go.
I have been on the PRONI site and found alot of Herons and Skimins and Miskimins, I think I am better off waiting to get the confirmation that my family did originate from this area. I will have a look at the other sites you suggested.
thanks again,
Dale
