Laird, Hugh Smith

Hugh Smith Laird was born 1807 in Down. He emigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1832. He married Ellen Campbell there in 1837. They eventually migrated to Jo Daviess County, Illinois in 1843. Hugh and Ellen had nine children. In birth order, their names were: James (b. 1838), Elizabeth (1840-1844), William H. (b. 1843), Elizabeth (1845-1847), Hugh (1847-1848), Sarah Jane (b. 1849), John (my great grandfather, b. 1852), Hugh J. (b. 1855), and David N. (b. 1858). Hugh and Ellen may have followed a standard naming convention for their children (first born son named after father's father, first born daughter named after mother's mother, etc.) as Ellen's mother's name was Elizabeth. 

Hugh died 10 June, 1884 in Jo Daviess County. I have no information about his parents or siblings. I have been unable to locate any kind of ship's passenger list so far. The information I have is based on U.S. census records, a family bible listing of his children's birth information, and a short bio from "The History of Jo Daviess County."
