Looking for information on the following families: they are from around the Newry Area.

McCaul/McCall  Delahunt(y)  McKeown  McAteer

Some of the McCauls spelt their name McCall. Since at least the 1800 the name has changed between both spellings.  The Delahunt(y) name has been spelt with a 'Y' and without.

  • Hi Seamus, my family is from the South Armagh area, and they were McKeown's.  Their parish was Loughgilly, and the townland where they lived was called Drumilly.  This area is south of Armagh city, north of Newry.  The family was James McKeown and Mary McCreesh McKeown, they were married in on Feb 2, 1858, and they had 6 children, one of which was my great grandfather, Patrick, who was born in 1862.  I was not able to get any birth or baptism records for my GGF, but I did for their other children.  Their other children were Ellen, born in 1860, Bridget born in 1863, John born in 1865, Edward born in 1867, and Peter born in 1869.  They were all baptised in the RC parish of Loughgilly.  Their Godparents were as follows:  Ellen's were Francis Maguire and Catherine McCoy, Bridget's were John McCreesh and Mary Mulhollan, John's were Michael McKeown and Bridget McCreesh, Edward's  were Felix McCreesh and Rose McParland, and Peter's were Pat McArdle and Catherine Burns.  I received this information from Armagh Ancestry, who conducted the research based on infomation I had from my father.

The McKeown's emigrated to America around 1870 and settled southeast of Columbus, OH in Perry County, OH.  They are my ancestors.  I hope this helps in your search.

  • I hope that you've been able to find more information on your ancestors. It would be helpful if you posted all the information you have on them, as mentioned earlier. Were you able to connect with your possible cousin, John McCune?

Please let us know what you need specifically.

    Every good wish,

    Beth
