Hello

I am trying to locate members of the BARRY of BERRY family.

My ancestor was born about 1850 and gave her birth place as Glassdrruumond, kilkeel.

The Griffiths have a john and Catherine in Glassdrummond, but I can find no marriage for a John, or indeed a baptism for Catherine.

Looking at civil registeration for the area it seems likely that my ancestor (catherine) had a paternal grandmother called Rose, who features in early land records on the Earl of Kilmoreys Mourne Park estate

naturally I would be thrilled to find someone who can help me with this tree but my general question is

Are there records missing from the Kilkeel parish records (catholic)?

does anyone know if people were married and baptised but NOT entered into the register?  (I know in scotland they had to pay to be entered in the book so perhaps catholics were baptised but poorer ones not entered??) Otherwise can anyone suggest where else to look, I have looked in the variuos parises around Kilkeel

Thank you

Kathleen (from New Zealand)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There are two possible parishes Kilkeel and Glasdrummond. Both parishes have records that start in either 1839 (Kilkeel) or 1842 (Glasdrummond). Links to the register are below and there is no apparent gap in either register ( at least according to the summary page). You need to review the registers and see if there are gaps around 1850.

I assume the Glasdrummond/Lower Mourne register is the one you want.

Can you clarify the first name of your ancestor? Was it Catherine? Do you know her parents names?

    Hi Roger

Thank you for your reply. Yes my ancestor was Catherine. I dont know her parents names, although her death certificate said her mother was Catherine . She had a sister, or cousin that also came to New Zealand and her death certificate said her parents were John and Catherine and that she was born in Kilowen. I checked the Kibroney records and found a Margaret  born to a John and Catherine but I couldnt find a Catherine born to this couple.

  • Hi Kathleen,

If you try www.tracingyourmourneroots,com you might be able to find any gravestones as they are all recorded on it.

    Best of Luck

  • Am I correct that you are looking for family members with the last name BARRY or BERRY? These surnames are mentioned only once in the original post and then nowwhere else in the thread. (I have never seen records on Berry, only Barry.)

I have BARRY relatives in Kilkeel parish. My 5G uncle (I think he's brother of my 4G grandmother) Michael BARRY married Margaret Houston and had five children. The BARRY children were all born in Kilcoo parish (right next door) but three of them (Charles, Mansell/Monsel and William) died in Kilkeel parish. William BARRY also got married in Kilkeel parish.

I also have a record on two people, probably related to me but haven't found the connection yet, who married in Glasdrummond Roman Catholic Chapel in Kilkeel civil parish: John McCARTAN and Ellen POLLIN (sometimes spelled POLAND or McPOLAND). There were numerous marriages between the BARRY, McCARTAN and McPOLAND families in the Kilkeel parish area.
