We are looking for records of our Fitzsimonds ancestors who would include:

Henry born 1789 in Kilmegan (fought in the 44th Foot)

his wife Jane Fee born 1791 (they appear to have belonged to the Church of Ireland)

and their children, some or all of whom are:

John  born 1818 married Margaret Shaw Sloan Adair married 03 March, 1846 in Newtownards, NI; and the baptism of their children Jane (b.1845) Sarah (b. 1847) and Henry (b.1851) at the same time. They lived in Donaghadee at this time.  Canadian records tell us this was just prior to leaving for Canada.

Elizabeth born 1819, birthplace unknown

Henry born 02 Feb 1820, birthplace unknown

There may be other children in this time gap - we hae no explanation for this gap in time.

Annie (Ann) born 1831, birthplace unknown

James born 1835, birthplace unknown

The family went to Canada from the mid 1840's to the mid 1850's.  A possible relative in Canada may be Rebecca Lucinda FitzSymons or FitzSymonds who married Stephen Curtis and at one time lived in North Dakota, USA.

This name is commonly spelled incorrectly but Henry Sr.'s army records spell it "Fitzsimonds" as did the whole family when they arrived in Canada.

  • Hi Laurel,

Thank you very much for your message.

Unfortunately, the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Some registers for urban areas pre-dating 1800 may exist ? though often these can be fragmented- as there was an increased need in cities or larger towns to document the population. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.

It may be an idea to contact the Ulster Historical Foundation for some assistance. However please note that a fee may apply. Here is their email: enquiry@uhf.org.uk

    Kind regards,
