I am looking for birth and marriage documents for James Fulton, born to John Fulton on January 10,1837, 38, or 39 in County Down. Agnes McWhinney was born to (?) William McWhinney possibly in Belfast on July 10, 1861. They were married in 1884, and came to the US that same year. They settled in Mansfield, Minnesota. They belonged to the Methodist Church in MN.

  • You won?t get a birth certificate for Agnes if she was born in 1861 as they hadn?t started in Ireland then. (They started in 1864). You might find her baptism record if you know her denomination and the church she attended. The UHF site has an Agnes Mawhinney baptism for 1862, father William, in Co Down. Mawhinney being a more common spelling of the surname in Ireland than McWhinney).

Bear in mind that many parish records are not on-line.

Can?t see the marriage listed. No-one named James Fulton married in Ireland in 1884 at all, never mind to Agnes. Could they have married in the US?

here's a page that I have found invaluable in my Down ancestors - Have a look and see if your relatives are listed - I didn't read all the Fulton but did see a marriage for James Fulton, son of John Fulton
