I am looking for information about George McWilliams, who married Margaret McCoy on 5 May 1785 in Seapatrick. The ceremony took place at the Banbridge 1st Non Subscribing Presbyterian Church. They emigrated to the US sometime before 1794.

  • Apologies for the very long delay in answering your message. Have you learned any more about the above?

  • Thanks for the response. No, I haven't found any more information. I do think that George McWilliams was born in Inverness, Scotland, in 1764, then moved to Ireland. Margaret supposedly was born in County Down, Ireland in 1768, but I have not been able to find the source of that information. Their son, Phillip, was born in 1786 in County Down; a daughter, Hannah, was born on 17 July, 1790 (according a family Bible). Their other children were born in the US. If you have any suggestions for where I could look, I would appreciate the advice.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Meri

I couldn't see a baptism for either Phillip or Hannah on rootsireland.ie. I take it the marriage record of the children does not yield any further information?

  • I have an ancestor Hannah McWilliams b. 7 July 1790 in County Down. Daughter of Margaret and George. Her siblings were Margaret, Philip and Elizabeth. She died in Morgan co. Ohio in1828. I don't have any info on her parents other than their names.

  • Yes, Hannah is the daughter of George McWilliams and Margaret McCoy. I am descended from her brother, George, who married Jane Hawkins in Ohio in 1819. I'm still trying to find more information about Margaret. I have not found any information in the descendants' marriage certificates.
