My great-great grandfather, William J. McGrane was born in May of 1831-32. He said he was from Baldoyle, Dublin, Ireland and he came over to the US( NYC) from there on the Yorkshire in May of 1850. Any information on his family of origin would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Donna McGrane

Hi Donna, thanks for your message.
There are a number of sources you could search for information on William and his family.
The land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ , may have some information on the family. As there is no complete census records prior to 1901 these are both very important genealogical sources for the period.
Also you can see what records are available for the area on the irishtimes website at
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseact…
Do you know much about their emigration? The reason why he left, who he may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. As you know that he arrived in New York, this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.
Some useful websites are:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp
http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
I hope these help. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
