  • date doesn't exactly fit with the date of burial you mentioned, but name and other details match - Samuel is mentioned in the Probate Calander as follows :

12th Feb 1883, the Will of Samuel Gore Downes formerly of 53 Bishop Street Dublin and of 10 Spire view Rathgar Co. Dublin, Gentleman deceased who died 11 December 1882 at Curzon Street was proved at the Principle Registry by Ann Downes of 39 Curzon street Widow the sole executrix. Effects are noted as £276 1s.

The death seems to be included in the FamilySearch Irish BMD index without a year and quarter, but this appears to be the most likely death entry as it's the correct district and a match to his full name :

    Name : Samuel Gore Downes
    Event Type : Death
    Quarter and Year [blank]
    Registration District : Dublin South
    Age : 74
    Volume 2 / Page 588

You can use the above to order a research cert from the GRO costing €4, I'd say if you mentioned the date of death and that the registration quarter was either Oct-Dec 1882, or Jan-Feb 1883 they would find the register entry ok.

There are baptisms of several children listed for St. Peter's Church of Ireland parish with father's name Samuel Gore Downes, but mother's name is Elizabeth rather than the Ann mentioned on the Probate Calendar entry... possibly a remarriage at some stage ?

This Samuel is listed as a Printer

p.s. Spire view is the name of a terrace on Rathgar road, and it's located on the west side of the road just north of the RC church. Curzon street is in Dublin South City and off the South Circular Road.

  • following up on the addresses mentioned in the Calendar entry above... from Thom's 1869 :

53 Bishop St., Samuel G. Downes, printer - residence 43 Rathgar Road

Spire view terrace includes numbers 31 to 43 Rathgar road, and number 43 is at the southern end near the junction with Grosnover Road. The address is listed as vacant in the 1869 directory, but in 1865 Samuel is listed at the the house on Rathgar Road, under the equivalent terrace number, which is 10.

  • Hi,

Many thanks for that very interesting information. I will certainly order the certificate and perhaps find his birth and parents names. I now have 7 children of Samuel and Elizabeth and don't know yet when Anne comes into the picture. It seems that he and I share the same employment!

  • Unfortunatly death certs dont include details of parents, but do include date, place and cause of death, occupation, reported age and also the name of the informant - who may be a family member.

  • There's a probate calendar entry for which would match those baptisms, for an Elizabeth Anne Downes listed in 1884. Date of death 11 July 1883, and place of death/residence 39 Curzon street, same as Samuel. The sole executor is a Loftus Walsh of Ashgrove, Dundrum, Co. Dublin.

Maybe Elizabeth used her middle name sometimes, as on the probate for Samuel, or the Ann is a daughter in Law ?

Checking back through directory listings for Downes/Downs printers or at the address mentioned in the city area, shows the following :

1824 Mrs. Downes, 2 Whitefriar St. printer
1834 Mr. Samuel Downes, letterpress printer, 14 Mountpleasant Ave. (Rathmines section)
1840 Samuel Gore Downes, 11 Charlemount st. Lwr. (no. occupation mentioned)
in the trades index seems to be listed as Sam. & John Downes / Downes Brother printers
1845 John Downes 4 York Str. printer
Samuel G. Downes, 19 Fade Street, printer - res. 11 Charlemont street, Lower
1846 Samuel Gore Downes, letter-press printer, 80 South Great Georges  St. house 11 Charlemont St.
1852 Samuel G. Downes, 53 Bishop St., general printing office
       (not at Spire view terrace)
1868 Samuel Gore Downes, 53 Bishop St., printer, res. 43 Rathgar Rd.
1870 Samuel Gore Downes, printer, 53 Bishop St.
1877 (not in gen. index, Bishop St. Curson St or at 43 Rathgar Rd.)
    1880 Mr. S.G. Downes, 39 Curzon St.
1884 Miss Downes, 39 Curzon St. (52 to 55 Bishop St. is Tenements)
    1894 James Whelan D.M.P., 39 Curzon St.

All the addresses mentioned, Mountpleasant, Charlemont, Sth. Gt. Georges St are Dublin south City, and not far from Curzon St., with Whitefirar St, being a little nearer the city centre. I dont see any sign of a marriage for Samuel to Elizabeth, and the earliest child to the couple I found is a Mary Stacey Downes in 1832. Address is Mount Pleasant Ave., so matches up with that printer in the directory listing. The parish for the baptism is St. Peter's Church of Ireland, which would cover most of the streets mentioned.

  • Hi

That is amazing to receive all that information about my printing family. SGD seems to have been born around 1809 so presumably the Samuel in 1834 is SGDs father. I have a burial record of 21/11/1847 at St Peters for Samuel (his father?) age 76 years of Camden Street.

Can you tell me if birth records exist as far back as 1771 and 1809 if so where can I search them?

Incidently, Mary's middle name Stacey might be after a 'Gentleman' John Butler Stacy whose wedding SGD was a witness at in 1843!

When I last visited Dublin I had no idea my family lived there. Now I must return and visit their homes.

    Thanks and regards

  • Most of the Church of Ireland Parish records for the Dublin City area are included on the free IrishGenealogy website at : http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

The dates available vary depending on the parish. Historic baptism, marriage and death/burials for St. Peter's parish go back to abt 1670 and these seem to be covered right back to the start on the Irish Genealogy website. You can opt to view and search just records for that parish using this link

Note the earlier records dont give much detail, so may not include addresses or occupations, and there are often missing, damaged or illegible pages in the older registers.

  • Hi, I have previously been given the information that Samuel Gore Downes was married to Elizabeth Anne Moulton (no date or place given).  Elizabeth was the daughter of Mary Moulton (Matthews).  Mary moved to Dublin with her young family after her husband Abraham Moulton was drowned in Hyde Park, London in 1806 leaving her pregnant with 4 other young children.  I have a newspaper cutting stating that Mary Moulton died in 1861 at the home of her Son In Law S.G. Downes at Rathgar Rd. Dublin.  Mary had two daughter whom I  know nothing about plus another daughter Mary Maria Moulton who married Charles Lilley Louch in Dublin in 1831.  The oldest child was a son named Abraham Matthews Moulton born in 1798 in Southampton whilst his father was serving in the 26th Light Dragoons.  Abraham and Mary also married there.  They later moved to Portugal where Mary Maria Moulton was born in 1800.  The son Abraham Matthews Moulton eventually migrated to Western Australia.  I am researching the Moulton side of the Downes family and if you can help me I would be most grateful.  Regards Vickie
