Looking for a marriage in Dublin c.1831-1834 of John Ryan (b. Thurles 1811) and Mary Maria Torpy (b. c.1812 Roscrea). John was in the 50th Regiment of Foot and stationed in Roscrea from July-Sep 1831, presumably when he may have met his wife-to-be. From there he was sent to Dublin at the end of 1831 and then to Newbridge. In 1833 he was posted to Chatham Barracks and in Nov 1834 boarded the Lady Nugent in the Thames as a guard of the male prisoners on their voyage to Australia. His wife by then, Mary, gave birth to their first daughter while the boat was at anchor in the Thames on 4 Dec 1834, therefore, she would have been pregnant by March 1834. Family accounts have given the marriage as either 1831 or 1834 in Dublin, so I would love to be able to confirm this by finding the parish entry.
Many thanks

I had a search on the IrishGenealogy website and there are quite a few John/Johannas Ryan marriages listed between 1829 and 1836 in Dublin parishes, but nothing to a bride with the surname Torpy or similar that I can see, also just one marriage over the same timeframe where the bride is Torpy, and that's a Mary Torpy to David Fleming.
Dublin can refer to the city or county, so could mean either in this case, but most of the larger barracks would be in the city area, although there were some smaller postings scattered around the county. RootsIreland (pay-website) has records for parts of County Dublin and also one large city parish not covered by IrishGenealogy website, but nothing promising showing for me for your Mary and John there either.
There seems to be quite a few people searching for this couple, and this marriage believed to have happened in Dublin is mentioned on nearly all the trees, but no specific sources or details are included. John and Mary must have quite a number of descendants in Australia. Maybe if they actually married, this took place on London in a barracks, or on a ship, like their daughter Margaret's birth ?

I'll reply to the question in your message here, as I've seen the same topic come up before.
The records for the majority of Catholic Parishes are available to view on microfilm in the National Library in Dublin, and these include films for parishes in the Diocese of Cashel & Emly. The Cashel and Emly records were restricted at one time and required written permission from the Diocese, but that's quite a while ago.
If all goes according to plan the complete collection of these films (over 1,000 parishes) should be available to view without charge online. Note these will be in the form of images, not transcripts, so will be a bit like scanning through a microfilm.

Thanks very much for letting me know. As I said, it is some time since I worked on this branch of the family and the records were restricted then. I purchased birth records through the Heritage Centre at that time. I look forward to my next visit to Ireland when I will take the opportunity to vist the National Library in Dublin and trawl through the records from John and Mary's home parishes in case there is a record of the marriage there. I also look forward to the partish records being available on line.

Hi, it looks like we share a relative. I am heading to Ireland for a week, and am looking for records on John and Mary Ryan. Did you end up finding any leads?
Thanks,
Rebecca
