I am seeking family history of my Hannon ancestors. My 3rd Great grandfather was Michael Hannon born in Dublin 1831.Father Thomas Hannon mother Elizabeth McGurk.
Michael married Eliza Hyland 1852. They emigrated to Australia and settled in Camperdown, Victoria, Australia. I would love to find out more history of their families and would welcome contact with any living Irish relatives.

  • Hi ssmullen,     I am neither a Hannon or McGurk,  this enquiry was passed to me,I see that Michael was born in Rathmines RC Church to the parents named and that he was Married in St Andrews  Westland Row. This Info is in Irish Genealogy, so I assume that you just want to meet up with the relatives. I mentioned the churches in case it jogs someones memory.  Best of luck    Searcher

  • Sorry, ssmullen, I assumed that you had seen the details on "Irish Genealogy",  if not,  You can go into this site, it is free, its the RC Church records for some parts of Ireland,  if you put in Hannon sir name you should get it. also if you type in nli, you should get the Catholic parish records at the National Library of Ireland , this site is also free and you can see the actual record, from the church books. Id send you a link, but Ive never found out how , although I use the computer all the time. any prob. come back Best  Searcher

  • Hi ssmullen.      Irish Genealogy        FamilySearch.org   I found out how.    Irish genealogy has two sections a Church records and Civil records , civil after 1864 for catholic records.  Family search is good too but has a lot of USA records so filter them out. I found two other brothers to Michael, Martin, born 28-4-1830 and Thomas 9-7-1843,  same parents. There may be others..         Also The National Archives.ie  and as I said Nli.ie There is also a Census on line for 1901 and 1911 . you just need Dublin .                    best Searcher

  • Thank you searcher, I have been continuing to search for information on my 3rd great grandfather Michael Hannon born in Dublin 1831, Rathmines RC Church and his brothers Martin born 28/4/1830 and Thomas born 9/7/1843.I was told by my grandfather (spouse of Veronica kennedy Hannon) that Michael and Martin left Dublin however I have only found immigration records for Michael to Australia.

Martin remains a mystery as does Thomas.

I have not been able to find much history for Martin or brother Thomas, confusion reigns, so many Martins and Thomas Hannons that I  found trying to unravel them a little overwhelming.

  • Hi ssmullen,  not much I can tell you about  the young Thomas, but I looked for the Father  Thomas the elder, I reckoned he was born about 1810 and there was a Thomas who died in1871 aged 64 his address was given as Anglesea Street, the witness was from Mt Plesant Avenue which I know is in rathmines, He was a Tailor Married. I looked for Elizabeths Death and found it in1872 the details were age 50, address 13 Mt Plesant Place  a widow of a gardener?   Michael did Marry Elizabeth Hyland 6/6/1852 in St Andrews RC church which is down from Rathmines,  I think Elizabeths father was William.    Best Searcher

It looks like your ancestor, Thomas had at least two other siblings .

Thomas Hannon and Elizabeth McGurk had a child baptised

in Rathminies in 1828, it is not clear what the name or gender is, transcribed as Joas, worth looking at the original

They also had a son Patrick baptised in 1833, also in Rathmines, details attached.

I woudl strongly recommend you have DNA undertaken to see if you can match to a descendant of Martin, or Thomas or Patrick or Joas ( Joseph? John?) . Good luck!

  • Thank you to all the searchers for your input, i will undertake a search using the information you have generously provided.

I have undertaken a DNA test with Ancestrey  a couple of years ago, hopefully there is someone out there who knows more of my ancestors who will pop up some day.

    Thanks so much!
