  • The marriage took place in St. George's Church of Ireland parish, Hardwick St. Dublin city. You can see a transcript of the record and an image of the register here  (you may have to enter a Captcha security code to access the details)

  • The reference to Dublin North suggest that record might be a civil record, as that's the name of the registration district covers north Dublin city and parts of the county. There's a marriage showing on the BMD Index for a William Pole Collingwood in Dublin North during 1854, which seems to match. In case you dont already have the references they are district Dublin North, Volume 5, page 60. A matching entry appears for a  Jane Constance Mostyn

This must be a non-Catholic marriage, since registration only covered non-Catholic marriages until 1864. A research cert would be available from the GRO which would include more details - father's names etc.

Depending on which parish and denomination the Church was, a record of the marriage may also be included on the free IrishGenalogy website.

(p.s. this may also be a registry office marriage in which case it would not be included on the IrishGenealogy website)

  • The Irish Genealogy website also has a baptism in the same parish of a son born to William and Jane, Frederick William Pole Collingwood, born 28th May 1855, bapt 16th July. The address shown of 9 Rutland Sq. East is the same as that given for Jane on the marriage record. (Rutland square is now named Parnell Square)

  • Thank you Shane for your quick responses, all most interesting.  I presume the civil records are not available any more or did some survive?

The information discovered here is not what I had expected, so will be spending a while exploring this, what is for me, a new resource.

    Thank you again,

    Chris

  • Civil records are intact and start from 1864 for Births, Marriages and deaths. Non-Catholic marriage registration started in 1845. The Church of Ireland marriage record as linked above is exactly the same format and content as a civil marriage record at that time.

On the IrishGenealogy website you can also find Jane's baptism, baptisms of some of her siblings and also a likely match for her parent's marriage. Let me know if you need a hand to find these..

It looks like Jane's father died some time around 1851, as he's listed in directory listings at the Rutland Sq. address before this, but after that date a 'Mrs Mostyn' is listed instead. The family seem to have also had an earlier address (poss. at the same time as a city address) at Booterstown, in county Dublin, and just south of the city.

Folliott T. Mostyn, procter, 9 Rutland square east and Hermitage, Cross ave., Booterstown
    (from Thom's 1850 directory)

EDIT : for some information on various state and church records see : Irish Civil Registration and Searching Irish Church Records  (Irish Genealogy Toolkit)

  • Jane's baptism in 1833, St. Mary's Church of Ireland parish, Dublin city. Her father's name is rare and so easy to spot... gives his occupation as Proctor of Prerogative, and Jane's mother as Elizabeth. There's no address other than the parish on this record, or date of birth for Jane.

Baptisms for siblings of Jane, all younger :
    Eliza 1835
    Margaret 1837
    Henrietta 1839
    Georgina 1842
    Emma 1844

The earlier baptisms are listed St. Mary's when the family lived at Upr. Dominck St, and the later two in St. George, when they lived at Rutland Sq.

Also listed in St. Mary's Church of Ireland parish is a marriage for Jane's parents in 1831 :
Marriage of Folliott Thornton Mostyn and Elizabeth Armstrong on 6 October 1831

Other people with the surname Mostyn are mentioned in the Dublin city records, possibly related at some point, some also with legal professions - see this link

There's also a slightly earlier record in 1826 that could be connected, a death/burial of a 'Cath Mostyn' also of St. Mary parish with an address of 'Domk St.', probably an abbreviation for Dominick Street, as mentioned on several of the children's baptisms. Age at death for Cath is shown as '30'..possibly a sister to Folliot ?

Folliot is mentioned is several early Dublin directories :
1834 Pettigrew & Oulton : 34 Dominick St, as an Attorney , and residence at Maryville, Cross Ave. Booterstown
1840 Pettigrew & Oulton : Index shows Folliot as a Proctor at 34 Dominck St. Lwr. and with residence at Hermitage, Cross Ave. Booterstown, and also listed is a possible relation Thomas Mostyn solicitor at 36 Upr. Rutland St.

A Folliot Mostyn is also mentioned as a proctor in the earlier Pigott's directory from 1824, with the Dominick St. address. The middle initial is shown as J., so may be a misprint or misreading during compilation of the directory details, and meant to be T (Thornton), or possibly this relates to a Folliot snr. i.e. Jane's paternal grandfather ?

A Folliot Mostyn is also listed in Wilson's directory of 1814 (part of the Treble Almanac) with the old 's', i.e. a bit like Moftyn. He is listed under 'Proctors of  the Prerogative Court and Ecclesiastical Court' with his address as 16 Henrietta St. Dublin city.

There are several Mostyn individuals mentioned on the King's Inn admission papers, i.e. as Solicitors, Attorneys etc. No sign of Folliot but these could be related, see : here  (Irish Manuscript Commission - see page 372 / 373)

  • Dear Shane,

Thank you so much for all the Mostyn information you have gathered in such a short time.  So generous of you and hugely appreciated.

F(f)olliott Thornton Mostyn was a surprise to find as father of Jane Constance.  I have Henry Thornton Mostyn b 1789 in Glasgow on my tree he had children in Glasgow and Dublin. He is not to be confused with another Henry Thornton Mostyn b abt 1810 who emigrated to Australia.

Is  there some help I could offer you? I would be very happy to help you in some way in gratitude. Thank you again. Chris Woodhouse
